Position Title: Director of Corporate EHS

Function/Department: Operations

Immediate Supervisor (Position): Chief Manufacturing Officer

Position Summary

Plays a critical role in driving EHS excellence and fostering a safety-focused first organization culture within Petmate. Overall responsibility for establishing process and efficient systems to ensure compliance with Environmental, Health and Safety regulations. Work closely with Operations Leader to enhance all aspects of EHS performance.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements company wide consistent EHS process and technology that is data driven and results focused. Partner with site leaders on specific measures and targets that drive a safety culture.
  • Work with leaders to ensure site specific compliance with required EHS. This role is responsible for all external compliance reporting to federal or local organizations.
  • Develop a Petmate Safety Governance that includes multiple groups from steering committee to the individual locations on safety roadmap, process improvement, safety CapEx spend. Facilitate the Steering Committee to drive safety initiatives down through the operations.
  • Oversight of accident investigation and corrective actions. Partner with key leaders and human resources to implement incident management process which drives down recordables and assists management in day to day supervision. Analyzes accident and inspection data to detect trends and measure the state of the company’s EH&S program and processes. Pulls together site groups to implement corrective actions for injuries or incidents.
  • Ensure annual compliance and OSHA required trainings for respective leaders.
  • Responsible for Petmate Emergency Response Plans and publishing those. In addition, responsible for updating and executing safety policies to the organization.
  • While this role does not have direct reports, work in partnership with sites leaders on project roadmaps, deliverables of Safety Specialists on the floor and look for best practice learnings across facilities.
  • Owner of all required safety training and content (vendors) and ensure capturing training within company’s learning management system.
  • Researches, develops, plans, schedules, and conducts EH&S training to include: forklift, hearing conservation, lockout/tagout, confined spaces, machine safeguarding, electrical safety, heat stress, bloodborne pathogens, emergency action/evacuation, fire extinguisher, personal protective equipment, hazardous waste, storm water pollution prevention, and hazard communication. Works with site safety resources with deliverable dates and project planning support.
  • Ensures audits on solid and hazardous waste programs, ensures compliance with regulatory aspects of waste and storm water programs, ensures compliance with air permitting requirements, and coordinates with applicable local, state, and regulatory agencies.
  • Oversees safety recognition and incentive program to motivate reduction in accidents and associated costs. Lead employee engagement assessments, opportunities and deliverables with operations leadership.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering sciences, health and safety or a related discipline or equivalent credentials/experience.
  • 5 years or more experience in EH&S management or similar field.
  • A strong working knowledge of EH&S regulations and injury prevention techniques.
  • An in-depth knowledge of OSHA regulations and compliance standards, industrial hygiene, injury and loss prevention techniques is also required. OSHA training certifications.
  • A working knowledge of safety data analysis and reporting is strongly preferred.

  • Excellent customer services skills, including the ability to make corporate level presentations.
  • Project Management skills to include: milestones, deliverables, timelines and facilitate groups of people to outcomes.
  • Team player with a demonstrated ability to manage projects and lead teams. Ability to influence leaders at multi sites.
  • Formal project management background.
  • Negotiations skills driving to win-win
  • Strong facilitation and collaboration skills needed in this role.
  • Willingness to travel and work non-conventional hours.
  • PC platform computer experience and proficiency with Microsoft suite and software products. Ability to use excel for data analysis and metrics.
  • Ability to read, write through developing communications, policies and training content for safety related topics.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to climb, bend, stoop, crawl and squat to identify and monitor work areas and equipment. Must be able to see and hear to locate and identify safety hazards, work is done in moderate to noisy environments with intermittent exposure to weather elements.

Valid driver’s license and clean record. Ability to drive to multiple sites in a day. Some travel to out of state warehouse locations (as needed).
