Summary Description

Under direction of the Office of Facilities Management, provides leadership, direction, and oversight for the division in order to effectively and efficiently carry out the organizational mission and functions of the school districts outdoor educational environments. The director will provide an outdoor environment at all schools that is inviting, conducive to learning, and clean and maintained. In addition, will ensure that outdoor facilities and grounds are available for student and community use, including the creation and expansion of outdoor education opportunities. Areas overseen by the director include athletic infrastructure construction and installation, replacement and repair, maintenance, and standards development, including but not limited to stadium field surfaces; tracks; competition and practice fields; tennis and basketball courts; and physical education gymnasium equipment and standards. The director serves as liaison for Community Use of Public Facilities; and oversees the administration of the Real Estate Management program. The director ensures the operational efficiency of the division by developing efficient processes, targets, and performance measures to assess results. The director is expected to demonstrate leadership in the district's commitment to equity and excellence for staff and students.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, And ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of the latest grounds maintenance technologies, trends in industry, and of the construction trades. Ability to evaluate concept plans for outdoor educational designs and manage the landscape planning, design, construction, and maintenance cycle. Knowledge of the MCPS athletic program requirements, Capital Improvements Program, Maryland State School Construction Program and agencies involved in community use of public facilities. Ability to work with personnel in the maintenance and construction trades and excellent communications and human relations skills. Ability to negotiate details of complex professional service and real estate contracts.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, And EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree required from an accredited college or university. Master's degree preferred. Course work should include public administration, school facilities planning and architecture, and civil or mechanical engineering. Five years or more of experience in responsible management position in school landscape activities, MCPS athletics, capital projects management, or school facilities. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
