Class Summary

The Director of the Gulf Coast Safety Institute is responsible for designing and implementing a strategic plan to generate outreach and revenue for non-degreed Occupational Health and Safety continuing professional education programs and initiatives relative to stakeholders in the Region. Accountable for aligning employer and educational stakeholder interests and other academic factors contributing to an individual’s work readiness, risk mitigation, and occupational health and safety practices. Directly responsible for the functional oversite and overall direction and management of the Gulf Coast Safety Institute, ensuring compliance with and execution of safety policies and safety education and training to include unique events.

Directs and performs reviews and assessments of processes and procedures to provide education and training compliance with internal policies, procedures, standards, and external regulatory requirements to identify potential gaps and opportunities to improve the organization. Collaborates with Regional business and industry leaders to assess the value-add of innovative, integrated industry solutions—the incumbent interfaces directly with internal and external constituent groups to support VP-directed initiatives.

Minimum Education/Training/Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Safety or closely related field, or equivalent experience to demonstrate knowledge and leadership abilities. Three (3) years or more experience developing workforce training programs or related experience.

Preferred Education/Training/Experience

Preferred: Master’s Degree in Industrial Safety or related field. Five (5) ‘years’ experience developing workforce training, Occupational Health and Safety Education, or administrative higher education experience.

  • Occupational Health and Safety industry experience
  • Assess training needs, develop, and implement customized education and training solutions
  • Demonstrated customer-focused solution provider
  • Computer skills: office applications and risk management applications
  • Maintain a working knowledge of all applicable health and safety regulations and standards
  • Prioritizing among multiple initiatives and allocating resources efficiently
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills in English

Preferred Knowledge & Skills

  • Ability to assess the needs of local industry and provide for those needs by developing appropriate Occupational Health and Safety training programs
  • Research and implement alternative delivery systems, including those that utilize emerging technologies, locally and globally, to provide optimum access, training, and professional content for existing and new client populations and possible future implementation.
  • Selects, assigns, orients, trains, and evaluates the performance of assigned personnel and instructors.
  • Evaluate instructor performance with in-class observations and the effectiveness of training programs, providing recommendations for improvement.
  • Cultivate and leverage relationships with highly successful industry leaders
  • Determine program class schedules for each quarter to optimize student completion and meet revenue targets

Job Duties

  • Overseeing all occupational safety and health, programming elements activities, and events to achieve educational objectives while ensuring the college maintains a comprehensive safety program fitted to its unique operations.
  • Works in conjunction with the Associate Dean of Continuing Education to develop effective programs and policies and direct the development, delivery, and implementation of all Occupational Health and Safety programs in support of VP-directed initiatives
  • Establishes effective internal and external collaborative relationships for the efficient promotion of programs and events.
  • Design, develop, and implement programs and courses to meet the demands of the HSE industry and the community with input from key stakeholders.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable regulatory agencies, including federal, state, and local health, safety, and security-related laws and industry standards regarding occupational safety and health education and training.
  • Innovate and develop new processes and initiatives as the college evolves.
  • Build consensus, develop, and communicate the vision of future safety programs.
  • Ensure implementation of education and training methods or procedures designed to identify, evaluate, and correct unsafe conditions or behaviors that could result in personal injury or illness, violations of safety and health code or regulations, or property damage to business and industry clients.
  • Assists in preparing the department’s budget to assist in budget implementations; forecasting funds needed for additional resources; monitors and approves expenditures.
  • Manage profit and loss responsibilities for all programs quarterly with revenue meeting targeted revenue, headcount, and profitability margins.
  • New program revenue generation as directed by Associate Dean
  • Pursue additional grant funding opportunities and leverage existing grant funding resources
  • Supervises staff to include prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff are trained; and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations
  • Coordinate advisory committee meetings and implement appropriate changes to instructional curriculum or program content
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Physical Requirements

Positions in this class typically require stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are occasionally required, and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Minimum Salary Range $71,552

Mid Point Salary Range .

Maximum Salary Range $96,190
