Director of Communications and Marketing
The Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology (MMI) seeks a Director of Communications and Marketing. The MMI department is growing quickly. Currently, it has three degree programs, two Institutes (the Johns Hopkins Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases Research and Education Institute (LTBDI) and the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute(JHMRI)), several centers of excellence, and core facilities. The department has 57 faculty members (27 are tenured or tenure-track), 80 staff, 50 doctoral students, and 97 masters students. MMI is a basic science department training the next generation of scientists in the fields of bacteriology, mycology, vector biology, microbiology, immunology, virology, and parasitology. In addition, the department has R3, a unique program to develop critical thinking in science.
The Director of Communications and Marketing works directly with Departmental leadership to develop strategic initiatives and priorities with the objective of ensuring departmental growth by attracting superior faculty, trainees, and students. Responsibilities include conceptualizing, managing, and executing the strategic communications plan; leading both external and internal communications; developing and positioning the brand; promoting faculty as thought leaders; overseeing public relations and media relationships; and identifying opportunities to extend organizational reach and visibility.
The position will develop a team of (two) marketing and communications specialists to execute the tactics and content needed for the plan to achieve results. Tactics and products will be measured monthly. The position will develop regular communications with the scientific community regarding MMI research and training in the various disciplines of study and will focus on promoting scientific advances. The Director will have experience and knowledge of written and visual communications, along with the tools to track growth and results.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Plan, design, implement, and manage communications, marketing, public affairs strategy, and programs for a quickly growing department with overall responsibility for advancing the departmental mission.
- Responsible for the department's visibility, branding, and promotion through various approaches, such as social media, videos, articles, events etc.
- Provide consultation and advice to the departmental leadership on communications and marketing strategies and concerns.
- Establish effective communications and marketing policies and procedures, including identifying and selecting the most effective approaches supported by metrics.
- Direct communications and marketing research to provide sound advice and consultation to leadership.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of communications and marketing efforts and implement changes and best practices.
- Foster relationships between the faculty and various media outlets to reach national and international audiences.
- Collaborate with development staff representing respective areas to develop effective fundraising materials for the various departmental, institutes, and centers perspectives
- Manages a professional team; manages communications and marketing budget for the department.
- Master's Degree in Communication, Marketing or related field.
- Eight years related experience.
- Additional experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
- Prior laboratory experience at the undergraduate or post-undergraduate level.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
