Position Title: Director of Environmental, Health & Safety

Location: Hybrid (2-3 days in Green Bay, WI; 1 day in Mequon, WI; 1 day remote)

Reports to: Vice President of Environmental, Health, Safety & Energy

Direct Reports: 3-4


Position Summary:

Are you a seasoned leader passionate about creating a culture of safety and sustainability? As the Director of Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S), you'll play a pivotal role in shaping and executing the EH&S strategy across our multi-state operations. This hybrid position offers the unique opportunity to work both remote and onsite near Green Bay, WI and Mequon, WI locations, allowing you the flexibility to integrate work-life balance while driving impactful change.

In this role, you will lead a team of dedicated safety and environmental professionals to develop and implement comprehensive safety strategies, ensuring regulatory compliance and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility across the organization. Your leadership will be instrumental in achieving the vision of a safe, sustainable, and innovative workplace for our client.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership and Development:

  • Develop and execute a forward-thinking multi-year EHS strategy in collaboration with internal stakeholders; align safety objectives with business goals to enhance operational effectiveness
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of safety and environmental professionals across multiple businesses; inspire and cultivate a high-performance culture that delivers exceptional safety results across all locations
  • Serve as the Chairperson of the Operations Safety Leadership Team; lead sponsorship meetings to drive strategic discussions and ensure alignment with corporate safety objectives


Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management:

  • Oversee and manage compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and Local regulations concerning hazardous materials, environmental standards, and safety protocols; lead the environmental compliance team across multiple sites to ensure that operations are properly permitted and compliant
  • Supervise all environmental management systems, certifications, policies, procedures, and audits; ensure robust environmental compliance programs are in place and effective
  • Identify, assess, and manage strategic trends, risks, and opportunities; communicate future regulatory requirements and potential impacts to leadership and stakeholders


Sustainability and Environmental Initiatives:

  • Develop and manage sustainability programs focused on waste minimization, energy reduction, and environmental stewardship; champion initiatives that drive measurable improvements in environmental performance
  • Identify opportunities for strategic partnerships and participate in trade association working groups to stay abreast of industry trends and best practices
  • Lead the investigation, reporting, and management of environmental incidents; provide technical support for follow-up processes and continuous improvement initiatives


Stakeholder Engagement and Communication:

  • Advise division leadership on performance against safety and environmental objectives; provide insights and recommendations to enhance decision-making processes
  • Interface with insurance brokers, carriers, and the Risk Management team for property protection and risk mitigation; collaborate across departments to foster a unified approach to safety and environmental goals


Leadership Development & Coaching:

  • Provide leadership development, coaching, and training to the safety and environmental team; foster an environment of continuous learning and professional growth
  • Participate as a member of the EHS&E leadership team to set metrics, goals, and strategies for improving performance; monitor and report on progress to ensure accountability and transparency


Position Challenges:

  • Embed safety into all aspects of company culture, ensuring it becomes an intrinsic part of everyday operations and decision-making
  • Lead and inspire action in diverse and rapidly changing business conditions; drive change through effective communication and leadership
  • Stay ahead of evolving regulations and maintain compliance across multiple jurisdictions
  • Implement goals and ensure consistent performance across all business units
  • Develop high-performing, motivated employees who take ownership of environmental and safety performance


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Sciences/Management, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field; advanced degrees or certifications are a plus
  • 10+ years of broad-based progressive safety and environmental experience, with a strong focus on regulatory affairs; 5+ years at a management level in a multi-site manufacturing environment
  • Proven ability to drive cultural change around environmental engagement and safety culture; demonstrated leadership skills in building and managing high-performing teams
  • Practical experience in applying and administering environmental regulatory requirements in an industrial setting; experience interacting with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence and build relationships across businesses and functions; strong presentation skills for engaging with diverse audiences
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to articulate a course of action to cross-functional audiences; ability to interpret and apply OSHA regulations effectively
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time to various locations as needed
