JOB PURPOSE:

The Director Medical Surgical Services is responsible for providing effective leadership to manage the clinical and administrative direction of the nursing unit in response to patient and/or community health care needs and expectations. Clinical Role: The Director provides the framework for planning, directing, coordinating, and providing patient care services within the departments and in relation to other departments. The Director possesses a high degree of knowledge, expertise, and proficiency to role model and uphold an exemplary standard of nursing and respiratory practice. Administrative Role: The Director possesses the organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills for effective management of the department's human, material, and financial resources within budgetary guidelines. The Director utilizes sound judgement and effective communication and interpersonal skills necessary for team building and achieving customer satisfaction. The Director fosters a facility culture that focuses on continually assessing and improving performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage, supervise and coordinate delivery of patient care for assigned patient care areas on a 24-hour basis.
  • Ensure compliance with clinical patient care standards, established policies and procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain clinical competencies for assigned clinical areas and provides bedside care as needed.
  • Maintain required unit records, reports and statistics for administrative purposes, ensures compliance with established hospital policies, procedures, objectives, quality control, PI, safety, environmental and infection control.
  • Communicate requirements to staff and hold staff accountable to established requirements.
  • Oversees various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, terminations and other related activities.
  • Plan schedule and organize work for assigned areas ensuring proper distribution and delegation of assignments and efficient utilization of personnel, space and facilities.
  • Maintain overall accountability for the requisition, care and maintenance of unit inventory, equipment and supplies.
  • Collaborate with Chief Nursing Officer to determine fiscal requirements of assigned units and prepare budgetary recommendations.
  • Actively support and promote a professional practice model that encourages staff participation in the development of clinical standards that is collaborative, collegial and utilizes current trends and data in professional practice (clinical and administrative).
  • Serve as the collective voice for unit staff to communicate with administration.
  • Serve as the staff and patient advocate to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Interface with patients and families to ensure that care is consistent with their expectations.
  • Serve as a professional role model and mentor to staff by responding proactively and positively to change while supporting colleagues through the change process.
  • Serve as a change agent to facilitate communication and transition that supports the mission of the organization.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Minimum of five years of nursing experience and minimum of five years of progressive management experience required.

Minimum Licensure/Certification Required By Law

Current License in the State of Georgia as a Registered Nurse or NLC/eNLC Multistate License.

BLS certification required.

Additional Qualifications

Bachelors or Master's degree in nursing or related field preferred.
