Director of Safety & Compliance

The Director of Safety & Compliance will assist, the Transportation Director of Operations, the Senior Director of Contract Logistics, and the VP of North Star in developing, implementing, and ensuring compliance with our client’s enterprise safety programs. This person will collaboratively develop and own all activities to manage and improve fleet, warehouse and brokerage safety and regulatory compliance. The Director will lead a team of safety professionals who provide both front-line, consultation and support. Additionally, this position must understand the needs of employees, customers, and the community, and will treat all parties with dignity and respect in difficult situations and maintain a positive, service-focused

mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the Company’s Safety programs through a behavioral-based safety mindset. Promote a positive safety culture which recognizes and rewards safe behaviors and safe work practices while providing coaching and feedback for unsafe behaviors.
  • Collaborate with operational and functional leadership regarding behavioral safety and organizational policies and practices and create a culture of safety.
  • Promote the successful adherence to FMCSA Safety Management System – Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs). Communicate results and trends to transportation leadership and work to improve results.
  • Monitor and promote driver safety performance. Oversee performance reports and collaborate with Fleet Operations to identify drivers requiring additional training and education.
  • Develop, implement, manage, and monitor Companywide safety goals. Report results on a regular basis.
  • Institute Companywide safety awareness, education, and incentive programs.
  • Manage a diverse team while creating a culture that motivates people who can work in a team-based, participative, and results-oriented environment.
  • Develops and implements action plans as necessary to mitigate risks, including corrective action plans.
  • Educate and oversee the competency of managers in safety management practices, protocols, and procedures, mentoring and accountability.
  • Supports Asset-based (ABT) & Non-Asset-based (NABT) Transportation Operations in the compliance with the Department of Transportation (DOT) and other federal, state, and local rules and regulations.
  • Establishes process, procedures, and training to ensure transportation safety activities are aligned with the company’s established standards and procedures.
  • Partners with field leadership to develop vehicle accident and work-related injury prevention plans based on loss data and cause analysis and ensure plans are well executed.
  • Work with Operations as needed to identify driver safety and regulatory issues and reinforce driver performance improvement programs.
  • Facilitate the timely and proper incident response, management and reporting of commercial motor vehicle accidents by working closely with Safety, Operations and Legal teams.
  • Develop or enhance a claims management and financial risk assessment tool.

Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in Safety-Transportation Management or related field. A combination of education and applicable work experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in leading Transportation / Fleet Safety, at a company whose operations include Trucking & Warehousing Operations.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in leading, building, developing, and managing collaborative teams; Demonstrated results in establishing strategic goals and metrics for measuring success.
  • Certified Director of Safety (CDS) or related safety designation preferred.
  • OSHA Certified
  • Strong Computer application skills including Excel, Word, PowerPoint & Microsoft Outlook.
  • Expert knowledge of federal, state, and local fleet and safety regulatory requirements (DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, EPA, etc.).
  • Knowledge and experience with transportation systems and technology including but not limited to: ELDs, HOS, Transportation Management Systems (TMS) & Cameras.
  • Good executive presence with strong leadership, collaboration, analytical, influential, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Must be results-oriented with the ability to drive continuous improvement within the Safety organization as well as the overall organization.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally both verbally, non-verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent analytical and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to travel at varying frequencies and work long, irregular hours as required based on business demand.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Valid and current/former Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred but not required.

This position offers a competitive base salary.
