The Opportunity:

The Unity Environmental University Director of Student Career Services directly supports the Chief Career Officer in managing the operations of the Career Services unit, including but not limited to establishing preferential career opportunities for Unity students, recruiting preferred employers, internship/experiential program development, curating and maintaining employer relations.

This position ensures that Unity students receive career services, in alignment with the characteristics of Sustainable Educational Business Unit (SEBU) specific needs and will help support SEBUs which have not reached the level to support a dedicated Career Specialist.

The Director of Student Career Services, in collaboration with SEBU designated personnel (i.e., advisors and coaches), ensures students and alumni are supported with easily accessible career skill development resources; career related programming; provides, administers, and maintains career data-collection tools; provides career guidance; actively communicates employment opportunities, as well as helping track alumni career placement statistics and maintaining reports to align with gainful employment regulations.

This position is also responsible for managing apprenticeship relationships and meeting DOL obligations between Unity as an Intermediary Sponsor and both internal and external apprenticeship employers. This includes working with DOL and SEBU providers to align Unity classes to meet apprenticeship educational requirements.

The Unity Director of Student Career Services develops and maintains relationships with employers, graduate schools, and assigned organizations in coordination with institutional external partnership efforts. This position also assists with strategic efforts regarding the internship programs, including marketing and student recruitment; student success and retention; employer partner relationship management; and strategic planning as assigned.

Day to day responsibilities:

  • Proactively develop and implement strategies designed to increase employment opportunities for university students and graduates.
  • Strategically identify and build relationships with regional, state, national, and international employers for recruitment of university students and alumni.
  • Lead the development and implementation of Environmental Career Expos and other employer recruitment efforts connecting students, alumni, and employers.
  • Work with employers to develop marketing strategies to enhance employer presence to Unity students and alumni, which includes, but not limited to: recruitment, job postings, internships, career fairs, presentations, and networking.
  • Support and maintain relationships with federal, state, nonprofit, and private organizations, agencies, and businesses that employ or have the potential to employ Unity students and alumni or host interns in coordination with institutional partnership efforts.
  • Track job market demand, use of career services, trends in recruiting, job-offer data, and hiring results for students in various academic majors.
  • Provide informational meetings and training to assigned SEBU staff and support SEBU efforts to provide and communicate career services to students and alumni.
  • Function as a resource in responding to requests for information about internships, apprenticeships, or employment opportunities.
  • Compile online career development resources including, but not limited to, workshops, employer seminars, videos, how-to articles, and employer opportunity links.
  • Provide students and advisors/coaches with access to employment information through databases, web-based job boards, social media, email distribution, and Unity’s online career hub.
  • Formulate strategies for achieving greater participation rates for those students who underuse available career resources.
  • Coordinate with identified SEBU staff to implement internship process, placement, and collect data from evaluations. Educate SEBU faculty and staff on internship program and process.
  • Develop and monitor internship and experiential learning sites in coordination with institutional partnership plans. Maintain database of sites.
  • Provide internship program data and reports as required.
  • Oversee Social media pages including Unity Professional Network on LinkedIn and the Career Services page on Facebook.
  • Manage alumni surveys and collect and manage institutional job placement and outcomes, tracking and reporting job-related information to internal and external audiences.
  • Compile and report data on employer relations activities, assess employer relations efforts, and provide feedback as to the effectiveness of such efforts.
  • Maintain Career Services Dashboard and submit to the Chief Officer after each term.
  • Coordinate with DOL in overseeing Unity’s participation as an Apprenticeship Intermediary to internal and external apprenticeship employers, including providing guidance on aligning Unity classes to desired outcomes.
  • Act as liaison with DOL to provide required reporting on Maine apprenticeship placement and progress.
  • Coordinate sharing of alumni success stories with marketing for social media and the alumni newsletter.
  • Recommend policy and procedure changes regarding Career Services.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the office of Career Services.
  • Provide qualified leads for employer partnerships to be vetted by the Chief Career Officer.
  • Host and/or attend internal and external university events and represent the university as assigned.
  • Pro-actively communicate challenges, successes, and failures with leadership.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Do you have the skills?

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 3 - 5 years’ work in career services, workforce development, or related advising.
  • Ability and willingness to work with students from diverse political/socioeconomic backgrounds and a wide range of physical and academic abilities.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Maine driver’s license, with a clean driving record, and the ability to travel both domestically and internationally
  • Ability to work with faculty and staff.
  • Ability to work with diverse community partners and partnering organizations.
  • Successful experience with program development, delivery, promotion and assessment.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and persuasively to diverse internal and external stakeholders, including industry leaders, partners, and Unity leadership. Good computer skills with spreadsheet, database software, word processing, web-based job search databases and Windows software.
  • Ability to create and execute programs and assessment plans.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from faculty, staff, students, and employers.
  • Ability to explain complex projects to teams.
  • Ability to solve practical and logistical problems.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Just a half hour from Portland, Unity Environmental University Headquarters, Unity Environmental University Distance Education, The Technical School for Environmental Professions, and the School of Environmental Business & Sustainable Ventures are based at the Pineland Farms campus. The facilities are within easy access to one of the fastest-growing cities for startups in the country.

Work Schedule:

Work hours are specific to the requirements of this position and can include days, evenings, weekends. Working extended hours may be required as needed and Unity Environmental University employees must be flexible and cooperative in fulfilling their responsibilities while meeting the College’s needs.

Although at Unity Environmental University Enterprise employees are generally scheduled to work at their base location, there are times when travel is necessary and employees are required from time to time to attend events, meetings or work temporary assignments at any Unity Environmental University location.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, it is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand or walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The use of either hand for repetitive movements such as grasping, grasping, and turning, and fine manipulation is required as is the ability to use the telephone for internal and external communications.
