The Director of the Counseling Center (UTCCC) will lead a team of counselors, administrative staff and interns supervising activities that provides counseling to approximately 11,000 UTC students, consultation/educational outreach to UTC staff and faculty in the areas of academic and personal concerns and provides mental health crisis intervention & emergency intervention as needed. This position will provide clinical supervision for staff working toward licensure and provide oversite for graduate interns. In coordination with the Chief Health Affairs Officer, the director will determine and manage budgetary requirements, and allocate resources appropriately. This position may also serve as a liaison between the Counseling Center and College of Health Education and Professional Studies - Counselor Education academic unit. As time allows, the director may serve as faculty in that unit.

Duties And Responsibilities

Administrative Duties

Schedule, hire, and provide administrative supervision for clinicians and administrative staff; serve as a mentor for a) junior staff members working toward licensure and for b) new hires; identify and initiate new programs offered by the UTCCC or in conjunction with other units or community stakeholders to ensure comprehensive counseling services are offered to all UTC students; determine needs for additional staff during peak hours and hours of operation depending on student needs; manage work from home (telehealth) schedule based on the business needs of the Center; evaluates staff annually per the university policy; complete 6-month provisional review of new hires.

Direct Clinical Care

Oversee a reduced caseload of ongoing clients, engaging in intake services as needed; complete emergency evaluations of students in distress during business hours, providing clinical consultation to UTCCC staff and other UTC employees as needed; provide clinical supervision towards licensure for junior clinicians and consults with licensed professionals as needed as part of case management and as needed during crisis/critical case appointments; participate as member (or identify representative) of Students of Concern, Behavioral Intervention Team Threat Assessment Team, meeting at designated times.

Fiscal Responsibilities

Submit budget requests annually based on the needs of the Center and the University; manage day to day budget allocating resources and discussing any variation with the CHAO and the Director of Business Affairs for EMSA; approve expenses in IRIS, and for the procurement card; review and approves, when appropriate, requests for expenses outside of the Center's budget; manage request for continuing education from employees within the constraints of the budget; review contracts for Titanium, Protocol and physician supervision.

Strategic Planning

With the Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, the CHAO, and the Center's staff, develop SMART goals which support the division and the University's Strategic Plan; lead the Center in the development of the objectives to support the strategic plan; report quarterly on progress with the short- and long-term goals of the Center and revises as needed; develop policy and procedures that support the center's operations; serve on the appropriate committees that support wellness and mental health efforts for the campus community in relation to the strategic plan.

Emergency Crisis Intervention

Available to coordinate mental health crisis response and intervention services for the UTCCC and communicate these procedures to other University units so that students are served with expediency; engage with area mental health services providers, such as hospitals, in-patient psychiatric hospitals/clinics, psychiatrists, and clinicians, to create a network of referrals for university students and staff/faculty as needed.

The Ideal Candidate Will Possess The Following

  • Ability to make decision in emergency and crisis management
  • Knowledge of the budget process and ability to set and maintain budget
  • Ability and knowledge to perform mental health care at the advanced practice level
  • Skills to obtain mental health histories, interpret diagnostic tests, other treatments
  • Ability to manage, direct, and motivate a team of individuals to provide quality mental health care services in a university setting

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in Psychology, Counseling, Education, or Social Work; eligible in the state of Tennessee LPC-MHSP or license commensurate with degree; at least 5 years in clinical practice; experience in a leading division in secondary education or university counseling center; experience supervising staff and those working toward licensure (functioning as a senior counselor); experience providing clinical supervision and crisis management; experience in budgeting and managing personnel and other resources; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Doctoral degree in Counseling, Education, Psychology or related field; experience teaching at the university level.
