Overview

We are looking for an energetic Safety Director for our Cement Segment, with a passion to lead the development and continuous improvement of the company’s safety culture with the ultimate goal of zero harm. You will champion organization-wide safety policies and procedures, establish and maintain compliance with all safety and health laws and regulations issued by federal, state, and local agencies including MSHS, OSHA and DOT as well as lead the development and implementation of and segment-wide safety and health strategies to create and maintain a behavior-based safety culture to minimize the risk of injuries and incidents. This position supports a good standing in the community, sustainable operations, and adheres to and upholds all company policies, safety standards and federal / state regulations.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Develop a robust and sustainable behavior-safety culture that Interacts and works with employees from all levels within the organization to build and maintain a safety culture based on employee engagement and a goal of zero incidents.
  • Aligns and collaborates with corporate safety and other segments to ensure a more consistent approach to implementing safety regulations, rules, and Summit level safety programs.
  • Conduct regular site visits with safety and management teams to ensure compliance and identify opportunities to proactively reduce risks or hazards.
  • Conduct regular safety team calls and in person meetings to discuss progress, strategy, and new trends that support the strategic direction and leadership to drive accountability and engagement throughout the organization.
  • Establish effective lines of communication and a caring culture in which all employees have a personal, active engagement in safety compliance and addressing concerns with their colleagues.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with regulatory agencies, industry associations, and other stakeholders to stay current with trends and best practices in health, safety, security, and emergency management.
  • Ensure that all incidents are thoroughly investigated and that corrective actions are implemented properly. Ensure that safety incident data, insights, alerts, and other reports are fully distributed throughout the region.
  • Ensures compliance with all OSHA, MSHA, and FMCSA rules, regulations, and reporting requirements.
  • Manages timely reporting and effective case management of the worker's compensation, general liability, auto liability claims as well as minor property damage claims handled in-house.
  • Work collaboratively with to develop/enhance and implement emergency response plans and crisis management protocols, to include incident notification, response, and exercises.
  • Assess and implement continual safety/safety training with learning and engagement teams.
  • Maintains confidentiality of financial information, insurance and litigation documents, employee information (e.g. wage information, discipline, health information) and other sensitive and confidential information.
  • Other duties may be required and will be assigned as necessary.


Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety/engineering or closely related field required.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive responsibilities in areas of safety and health and occupational risk management, with at least 5-7 years of previous supervisory experience and 3+ years in senior leadership role (cement, chemical or heavy manufacturing experience is preferred).
  • Knowledge and compliance of OSHA, MSHA, DOT, FMCSA regulations required.
  • Must be a self-starter with strong strategic thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to function in a fast-paced business.
  • Must possess superior problem-solving skills; ability to identify and investigate potential problems with respect to all safety issues.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing successful health and safety management programs in a large, complex organization.
  • Strong leadership and executive communication skills with the ability to influence and persuade others, having a history of driving change.


Must possess an intuitive mind and ability to think independently, challenge situations in a constructive manner and present alternatives.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to communicate, build and manage strong teams at all levels of the organization including direct reports, leadership, and field/remote operations.


Knowledge of LEAN or continuous improvement processes in relation to safety initiatives preferred.

  • Experience in strategic planning and execution; formulating policy and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify trends and develop data-drive solutions.
  • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook to generate safety reports, data analysis, presentation, and communications.
  • Due to the nature of this position, it is essential that the teammate is flexible to travel as necessary to designated work site / office.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older with the ability to comply with the safe driving and operation of company / business use personal vehicle.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment screening which may include a physical, background check, and drug screen.

Frequent exposure to walking on rocky, irregular surfaces that may be muddy and in reduced lighting conditions, moving mechanical parts, electrical equipment, high and/or confined spaces, fumes, airborne particles, outside weather conditions and explosives. Occasionally be able to lift and/or move up to fifty (50) lbs. independently and tolerate moderate noise levels.
