POSITION SUMMARY: The Director, Scientific and Medical Affairs will be a key player in the integration of scientific discovery and implementation of new product development. This individual will possess a high level of knowledge in dietary supplement ingredients, sourcing, and utilization. They will help to bridge innovation and substantiation in the greater Research and Development and Thorne Science Institute teams.

The Director, Scientific and Medical Affairs will oversee the Scientific Affairs team, which will serve as subject matter experts in key areas of scientific concern for product development. The Scientific Affairs team will function within a cross-collaborative team in identifying new and novel ingredients for use in Thorne new product development projects. They will serve to transition scientific and medical claims discovery to the Medical Affairs team for substantiation. This individual will also be responsible for facilitating collaboration between the greater Research and Development functions of the company and the commercialization teams within Medical Affairs, Sales, and Marketing.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: 15-20% DIRECT/TOTAL REPORTS: 2-5

RESPONSIBILITIES – Satisfactorily performing and/or achieving the following Responsibilities are essential duties of the job.

  • Leads the Scientific Affairs team in creating a pipeline of new ingredients for consideration in new product development in collaboration with the Thorne Science Institute.
  • Provides scientific expertise and input in communicating product use to internal stakeholders across departments.
  • Creates claims dossier outlines with an organized and efficient handoff to the Medical Affairs team to finalize claims substantiation.
  • Supports the maintenance of claims and substantiation for new and existing products.
  • Supports the strategy for Thorne to be recognized as a leader in product science, quality and innovation.
  • Provides strategic oversight regarding industry trends and new developments with the goal of supporting new business and creating strategic plans that drive integration of the offerings of the company.
  • Establishes and directs a team of scientists to support various aspects of Thorne product development.
  • Creates organized and efficient strategies to bridge premarket science with post market support functions.
  • Participates in business development activities to drive new product and services innovation
  • Participates and supports new product, services, and business development initiatives that generate potential revenue creation and growth.
  • Ensures open and proactive communications between Research & Development, Thorne Science Institute, Medical Affairs, Sales, Marketing and other company representatives.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with other executives and functional areas.
  • Builds and leads a highly performing team, secures the best talent, develops and strengthens staff and future leaders, and provides ongoing coaching and feedback.
  • Conducts formal and informal performance assessments of staff, including performance versus expectations and goals, behaviors and leadership potential, and seeks the same for self.
  • Actively participates in required training, development programs, and electives as suit one’s needs, and supports colleagues, trainers, and management as appropriate with these efforts.

What You Need

  • EXPERIENCE / COMPETENCIES / PROFICIENCIES – Satisfactorily achieving and/or meeting the following Experience, Competencies, and Proficiencies are essential duties of the job:
  • Experience and/or Education: Master’s degree required; Advanced degree preferred. 5+ years professional experience with a demonstrated track record of success in managing multiple concurrent projects.
  • Language Ability: Employee is able to read at a highly technical and proficient level. The employee follows instructions, both verbal and written, and communicates effectively with supervisors and fellow employees.
  • Computer and Technical Skills: Employee can use the equipment and software required to accomplish the responsibilities of the position.
  • Comprehensive understanding of emerging trends in the dietary supplement marketplace, and how they may relate to promotional and clinical practices.
  • High level of nutritional product knowledge and appropriate use in new product development.
