Job Description

Routledge, a leading international academic publisher, part of Taylor & Francis Group, has an exciting opportunity for a commissioning editor to join our Mental Health team, responsible for managing and continuing to grow areas within our world-leading professional and academic books program.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and continuing to grow several areas within our list, working alongside other editors in the team. This position involves the proactive commissioning of a range of text types, with a core focus on professional books, across the following areas in Mental Health:

  • Clinical psychology
  • Arts and expressive therapies
  • Grief counselling/death studies
  • Occupational therapy
  • School counselling

The successful candidate will develop a strong commercial strategy for the program in line with Routledge’s overall objectives, will work to meet demanding signings and manuscript handover targets, and will use their awareness of competitor strengths and weaknesses to take advantage of opportunities in the market.

The successful candidate should possess strong commercial awareness, excellent networking skills and a collegiate attitude towards the sharing of projects and ideas. The ability to deliver revenue growth is essential.

What you'll be doing:

  • Meeting annual commissioning and revenue goals, commissioning new professional and academic books in order to meet market needs;
  • Meeting annual publishing goals, working closely with one or more editorial assistants to ensure that manuscript submission, production, and publishing deadlines are met;
  • Attending virtual and in-person events (which may involve international travel) to enhance subject knowledge and build relationships with key contacts as needed;
  • Developing awareness of different text types, products and publishing formats, and maintaining an understanding of business needs and objectives;
  • Exploring and seeking out Open Access publishing opportunities for the list and building awareness of OA publishing in target markets;
  • Close collaboration with a global editorial team to develop and maintain strategy for the list as well as overall strategy of the Mental Health team;
  • Close collaborationand relationship management with authors, editors, series editors, and other contributors, as well as editorial, journals, production, marketing, rights and sales colleagues.

Qualifications

What we're looking for:

  • A confident self-starter who can work quickly and independently, while liaising effectively with team members globally.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organisational skills, detail orientation, financial focus and the ability to budget and analyse financial data.
  • The ability to prioritise a varied workload under pressure.
  • Strong word processing, spreadsheet, and database skills.
  • Previous experience of book commissioning in academic publishing and familiarity with the academic book publishing process.
  • A thorough understanding of current market trends and competitor activity to inform decisions on product and concept development.
  • A commercial mindset and awareness of customer needs for professional publishing.
  • Creative thinking and excellent use of initiative.
  • Proven ability to work with stakeholders to resolve conflicts and overcome obstacles.
