The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist, reports directly to the Environmental Health and Safety Manager and is responsible for all environmental, health, and safety programs at the Nashville Gibson Custom Shop and warehousing operation including: regulatory compliance, program development, report generation and submittal, management of air emissions, waste reduction and disposal. Provides on-site expertise for all EHS matters to prevent and eliminate injury and illness to employees. Must have the willingness to dive deep into the details while keeping an eye on the bigger picture will be critical. A demonstrated ability to influence people and successful experiences working in a fast-paced organization. This is a hands-on position.

Essential Functions

  • Maintains and applies knowledge of current policies, regulations, and processes
  • Recommends process improvements to reduce team member risk related to chemical and physical work hazards
  • Inspects facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and corrects potential hazards, and ensures compliance
  • Supports investigations of incidents including first aid and near misses to determine root causes and preventive measures
  • Reviews change management and specifications for new machinery or equipment to determine all safety requirements
  • Reviews findings from team member safety observations, and coordinates appropriate corrective actions
  • Assists with injury management and maintains OSHA 300 log
  • Facilitates implementation of ISO 45001 – Occupational health and safety management systems
  • Maintains required EPA compliance (e.g. Synthetic Minor air permit regarding VOC emissions, hazardous waste, general waste reduction, Tier 2, etc)
  • Reviews safety programs to determine their adequacy and implements safety training (e.g. lockout/tagout, hazard communication, ergonomics, PIT, respiratory protection, etc.)
  • Participates in weekly EHS Leader meeting to review company-wide incidents and determine best practices
  • Manages Early Symptom Intervention program with Athletic Trainer
  • Assist in development of standardized job hazard analysis
  • Manages Safety Committee
  • Execute annual objectives/KPI’s and establish operating policies as needed

Required Skills And Competencies

  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA/EPA regulations and violations
  • Knowledge of all relevant safety standards related to area of responsibility required
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and organize workload to meet organizational timelines in a fast paced, very high-growth environment
  • Leadership skills necessary to coach and mentor others with an ability to develop a team and set priorities
  • Excellent planning, management, oral and written communication skills
  • Good analytical and critical thinking skills, with ability to make effective decisions regarding EHS
  • Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints
  • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation, with a track record for delivering to plan
  • Flexibility to adapt quickly to changing circumstances; able to proactively question and challenge to prioritize and identify solutions in timely manner
  • Able to see the big picture but possesses a pragmatic /flexible approach to delivery
  • Curious in nature and always looking to question, learn, and look for improvements

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, engineering, environmental or a related technical discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 3-5 years related EHS experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Proven ability to work with all levels of management

Occasional travel between multiple Nashville company locations

  • Basic physical stances and actions (sitting, standing, walking)
