General Purpose:

The Senior Manager, HSE Construction position is a critical role within Vestas’ North America Health, Safety, and Environment function, overseeing a team of HSE professionals, both employees and contractors, dispersed throughout the United States and Canada. This position’s primary responsibilities involve supporting the HSE needs of our Customer Project Execution (Construction) business, offering guidance and consultation on all aspects of HSE pertaining to the transportation, construction, and commissioning of onshore and offshore wind turbine generators.


Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate a no-harm safety culture guided by human performance principles and operational learning.
  • Facilitate compliance with relevant regulatory requirements in US and Canada (federal, provincial, state, local).
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with customers and suppliers.
  • Lead, develop and mentor a team of geographically dispersed HSE field professionals – employees and contractors.
  • Track and trend hazards and incidents to identify continual improvement opportunities.
  • Facilitate HSE governance continual improvement through the development and execution of multi-year HSE strategy and tactical plan.
  • Ensure adherence to Vestas processes related to HSE with specific focus on environmental processes including recycling, waste reduction and minimizing fuel consumption and other projects aimed to reduce Vestas’ environmental footprint.
  • Facilitate ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 9001 standard certifications including external audits and management system deployment and continual improvement.
  • Support injury management, claims management and worker’s compensation processes.
  • Support execution of internal auditing and other assurance programs.
  • Facilitate operational learning of incidents (including near misses, releases, and losses) and corrective/preventive action processes.
  • Maintain current knowledge of HSE industry best practices and technological developments and equipment to remain up to date on related systems, devices and techniques designed to eliminate or minimize associated risks.
  • Provide support and oversight to HSE-related training programs. Training may include strategies and goals to develop/improve safety culture, HSE technical programs/policies, injury trend data, HSE/regulatory information pertinent to the jurisdiction, workers' compensation/injury case management, and basic knowledge related to safe operation of equipment and tooling.

Essential Functions:

  • Significant technical and presentation writing abilities.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, efficiently in a remote environment with limited supervision.
  • Ability to safely climb and work in wind turbines.
  • Ability to frequently travel within regional footprint (US and Canada), 20-40% travel.
  • Ability to travel to countries outside North America.

Education, Training, and Skills Required:

  • Bachelor's or Associates degree with a minimum of five to eight years’ work experience in General Industry, Industrial, or Construction environmental, health, and safety preferred.
  • Certification (CSP/ASP/CRSP/GSP) preferred.
  • Experience in applying international HSE standards (ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001) across business units and geographies.
  • Experience with cranes, lifting and rigging, working at heights, safety management systems, control of hazardous energy, confined space requirements, work at heights and soft tissue injury prevention.
  • Mentor/coach as technical expert and influence internal and external stakeholders.
  • Interpret regulations and company policy and deliver meaningful reasoning and education in support of regulations, along with the creation of regional specific campaigns that promote ownership of Vestas HSE by everyone.
  • Conduct/lead incident learnings/investigations, identify effective and sustainable corrective/preventive actions.
  • Conduct internal HSE audits to standard and identify corrective/preventive actions.
  • Conduct risk assessments to identify/implement controls and mitigate or minimize HSE-related risks.
  • Collaborate with multiple levels of the Vestas organization including front line workforce, managers, directors, and support departments.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and basic skills in SAP.
