Job Summary

Serve as team leader to provide development, coordination and facilitation for temporary and long-term exhibitions. Understand the idea, subject matter, and content of each project to co-create visual and digital exhibitions and displays with department staff. Develops digital content and media strategies for all Learning Experiences and Curatorial initiatives by determining audience, tech platforms, and goals. Works with teams across the museum to facilitate the planning, preparation, and production to develop multimedia learning experiences for exhibits and programs. This position is responsible for all aspects of digital media production, from design, prototyping, programming, and integration/installation into exhibitions.

Job Scope

Budgetary supervision over operational exhibition projects. No staff supervision responsibilities. Liaise with departments and subject matter experts to support the digital media projects. Acts as the point of contact for exhibit vendors.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

  • LEADS the short and long-term exhibit planning for the museum that reflect innovative storytelling ideas, trending community conversations, and interesting exhibit ideas. Leads traveling or rental exhibit projects.
  • CONSULTS AND COLLABORATES with lead staff in the creation of exhibition designs, taking into consideration collection, content, digital media, interactives, accessibility, audience, and cultural sensibilities.
  • DEVELOPS design concepts and digital media components, oversees fabrication, installation, and upkeep of on- and off-site exhibits, including, but not limited to, regular updates of the five-year changing exhibit schedule for the site and any long-term exhibit development.
  • PREPARES elevations and layouts for review with team and leadership. Incorporate feedback and complete revisions in final production graphic files based on the established project schedule and budget. Coordinate with printers and producers for the final production and delivery of physical or digital designed pieces. Oversees fabrication and installation of exhibition.
  • LEADS the research, design, fabrication, installation and upkeep of building furnishing plans. Determines new ideas for digital media interactions in buildings.
  • Play a key role in the creation of enriched digital long form stories that feature objects from the collection particularly in video, voiceover video, animation, and gaming applications.
  • CREATES AND EXPANDS innovative informal and formal learning initiatives; and enhances the visitor service.
  • DEVELOPS innovative approaches to engage online and onsite audiences with digital storytelling, exhibits, and the Innovation Gateway’s digital experience.
  • SERVES as videographer and content editor for internal and external media.
  • ENSURES that needed technology hardware, software, and data storage and retrieval are requested and operational to project needs.
  • NETWORKS with local, regional, and national professional and museum colleagues.
  • PERFORMS all other duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge And Abilities

  • Must have excellent computer skills and extensive knowledge of current software and hardware applications and platforms with regards to audio/video, AR and VR, and other relevant technology such as UI/UX design within the exhibits department. Familiarity with software and platform capabilities as well as current equipment and hardware technologies.
  • Ability to design interactive and engaging programming and match appropriate delivery mode or technology. Familiarity with MS Office, Google products, various project-management platforms, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and various CMS platforms; be willing to learn new programs as needed
  • Experience with developing RFPs, contracts, budgets, and schedules, as well as tracking and managing assets, including rights and permissions for outsourced material.
  • Museum experience preferred with a background in digital or media production, museum studies, or related field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with donors, the public, volunteers, staff and Naperville Heritage Society members is important.
  • Physical ability to lift and move collection objects.

Essential Functions

  • Ability to operate office equipment in order to send and receive information with necessary optical, auditory, and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to analyze, compute and audit information.
  • Ability to walk, sit, or stand for an hour or more at a time.
  • Ability to lift or carry objects weighing at least 25 pounds.
  • Ability to operate or observe office equipment for an hour or more at a time.
  • Ability to distinguish colors.
  • Ability to use a keyboard to enter, retrieve or transfer words or data.
  • Ability to closely examine computer screen or written reports.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and speak English and be able to demonstrate twelfth grade reading skill.
  • Ability to work in an area that may be uncomfortable due to temperature variation, noise, odors, or other conditions.

Minimum Education, Experience And Certification

Bachelor’s degree required in communications, design, art, museum studies, computer science, or related field. At least four years of experience in exhibit design for museums preferred. Demonstrated proficiency with innovative graphic design. Knowledge and understanding of current best practices for the design of inclusive exhibits that are accessible to all. Demonstrated success in creating digital and print materials for museums. Experience in project management preferred.
