Tasks

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for Finance team compliance including but not limited to payroll practices, 401K and workers' compensation audits, and billing sales tax compliance to maintain a consistent oversight of financial regulatory standards, procedures, and policies
  • Oversee tracking of internal audits related to payroll and billing functions; provide summarized audit findings to leadership to mitigate errors and ensure adherence to procedures
  • Monitor regulatory changes; coordinate and perform updates to process documentation to ensure consistent compliance with regulations and mitigate compliance risks
  • Conduct training sessions for Finance team members on compliance-driven process changes to guarantee a high level of accuracy and thorough understanding of updated materials
  • Manage escalated issues concerning tax notices or audits for federal, state, and local taxes, with guidance from the Controller, to enable prompt resolutions and mitigate litigation risks
  • Monitor and interpret wage, hour, and salary threshold laws, along with state sales tax law, to provide actionable compliance solutions to the Finance leadership team and ensure continued legal compliance
  • Generate detailed compliance reports for Finance leadership to communicate compliance objectives that support strategic decision-making
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including tax and audit firms, to ensure high compliance with federal, state, and local regulations; exercise strong independent judgment and consistency in advising stakeholders on ambiguous regulatory guidelines
  • Analyze payroll inconsistencies to determine root cause and solutions; develop an effective course of action to support equity in the application of payroll policies
  • Prepare and submit returns, payment information for sales, excise tax, personal property tax filings, and reconcile withheld and remitted amounts for payroll and sales tax compliance to resolve discrepancies and ensure accurate, timely filings
  • Provide backup support for the Payroll and Finance teams as needed to ensure deadlines are met

Required Skills & Certifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Accounting, HR or related field or 5+ years equivalent work experience in payroll, accounting or compliance within a business environment
  • Strong risk assessment skills with a drive to minimize risk related to broader business decisions or specific Finance team processes
  • Practical and effective problem-solving ability to identify risk and solve the problem in a structured and straightforward method
  • Ability to interpret data and draw logical conclusions particularly when data can be interpreted in multiple ways
  • Highly organized and self-motivated to complete tasks independently with a dependable and reliable work ethic
  • Excellent time management skills and attention to detail with the ability to manage several complex tasks and projects concurrently
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and a positive attitude in difficult situations
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Excel; Visio or other flow chart experience
