Located in the heart of Napa Valley, the Raymond Vineyard estate is dedicated to sustainable farming through organic and biodynamic methods, hallmarks of Boisset family properties worldwide. The winery produces terroir-driven wines that represent the estate and local growing regions, along with serving as the main production facility for Boisset Family Estate Wines.

Reporting directly to the enologist, this position will also collaborate with the winemaking and cellar teams at Raymond Vineyards. The role demands adherence to rigorous analytical practices for data generation. Responsibilities encompass sampling, standardization, instrument calibration, bench-top trials, and sanitation procedures. Additionally, the harvest lab technician may assist with inoculations and provide support to the cellar staff as required.

Essential Functions

  • Perform periodic tastings of samples for quality control; identifying flaws or problems and/or identifying superior quality lots, laying groundwork for blending, tracking fermentation process.

Maintain close contact with production/cellar staff, tracking winemaking operations for planning, scheduling, and performing analysis and sampling.

  • Operate/troubleshoot laboratory equipment: arrange for repairs, maintenance, and/or replacement when necessary.
  • Maintain a clean, organized environment within the lab. Prepare and standardize routine chemicals for use in tasks listed above.
  • Participate in scheduling work orders and maintaining activities calendar.
  • Prepare samples as requested for brokers, bulk sales, private label, or other sales channels as needed.
  • Possess intermediate computer skills which can include e-mail, spreadsheet, basic database activity, and comfort with standard winemaker software programs.
  • Timely record keeping in Workforce Now - ADP.

Additional Functions

  • Comply with all company safety policies, practices, and procedures. Participate in safety training and report all unsafe conditions or work practices.
  • Participate in team efforts and perform additional duties as needed.

Language

Necessary Skills:

  • Ability to speak and understand basic English required for all positions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as memos, instructions, policies, and manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to present information effectively to groups of customers and/or employees, and participate in one-on-one and small group situations.

Math

  • Ability to calculate items such as percentages, areas, circumference, and volume. Ability to understand fractions, ratios, and proportions. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Logic

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to a variety of tasks and duties. Ability to adapt to minor changes in routine, solve basic problems, and work with moderate supervision.

Computer

  • Possess intermediate computer skills which can include e-mail, internet, word processing, spreadsheet, basic database activity.

Education, Experience, Certificates, Licenses

  • Academic and/or professional laboratory experience is required. Wine-specific analytical experience is ideal. Those who are detail-oriented, analytically minded, and flexible to changing priorities will be best suited to the position.
  • Current, valid Driver's License, insurable driving record, and proof of current automobile insurance required.

Physical Requirements

  • Moderate physical activity performing occasional somewhat strenuous activities including standing, walking, climbing, reaching, and carrying. Manual dexterity sufficient to reach, handle items, and work with the fingers. Requires lifting and moving objects up to 50 lbs. in weight. Clear vision (close and distant) and ability to adjust focus. Hearing adequate for telephone, office, and group conversation.

Work Environment

  • Indoor and outdoor environment with variable lighting, temperature and/or ventilation. Areas may or may not be heated, air-conditioned, or shaded. Outdoor periods frequently required in changing weather conditions. Exposure to fumes and/or a variety of chemicals. Moderate to high noise levels typical of machinery, power tools, vehicles, and other equipment. (Note: PPE provided for all workers.)

Schedule And Travel Requirements

  • Variable schedule: primarily a set schedule but may require weekends, periodic evenings, and/or periodic or seasonal overtime.
  • Position does not require overnight travel.
