Function

This function is responsible for developing and maturing our underwriting systems and controls framework ensuring that our underwriting practices are aligned to the strategy, approved Business Plan and Underwriting Policy/Procedures.  The scope of function includes development and training of all controls that apply across all lines of business including more specific guidelines, processes at the class of business level.


Role

This is a high impact role for a passionate insurance expert, who enjoys business strategy, controls and underwriting talent development. We are looking for someone who thinks creatively about governance. This role will work to deliver a best-in-class underwriting controls framework that will support high quality underwriter training, development and process improvements. The Head of Underwriting Excellence ensures adherence to our Underwriting Policies with efficient and rigorous detection controls such as partner audits, internal audits, and peer reviews.  The role will report to the Chief Underwriting Officer and sit on the Underwriting leadership team. Responsibilities

Underwriting Controls

  • Accountable for development and maintenance of effective processes, policies, procedures, protocols, and controls to ensure effective and quality underwriting. 
  • Deliver holistic UW control solutions to scale the business’s risk management practices and drive progressive implementation of common systems, working practices, service levels and procedures.
  • Implement process change resulting from regulatory change, strategic decisions, or adoption of best practices.
  • Manage internal and external audit procedures.
  • Contribute to the overall effectiveness and value of Underwriting Excellence by recommending improvement other areas such as data, pricing, and exposure management.

UW Training and Development 

  • Accountable for the execution of underwriting guidelines and best practices across all of underwriting.
  • Create an intuitive UW development and support model that assures UW talent is armed with the knowledge and information to respond quickly to the market and make risk decisions within authority levels and risk appetite.
  • Drive the development of authority controls including associated manuals and job aides and manage authority levels towards positive underwriting engagement and makes efficient use of talent. 


Qualifications/Requirements

  • Minimum of 7-years of underwriting or compliance experience in P&C Insurance, preferably for an E&S carrier
  • Demonstrated ability to drive underwriting quality success; able to co-ordinate multiple tasks and make sure work output of others is delivered on-time and accurately 
  • In-depth knowledge of what’s needed and works in terms of procedures and controls which are appropriate to the nature, scale and complexity of our business
  • Track record of getting others to execute efficiently towards a common and understood goal.
  • Ability to communicate using data and logic to influence key decisions and ability to act strategically and influence results.  
  • Experience in corporate governance and controls management including exposure to a wide variety of systems.
  • Well organized with relentless attention to detail
