Position Summary:

The Health Physicist will support the Nusano radiation protection program while ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations. This position will provide hands-on and strategic support to the Nusano facilities. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research while maintaining the highest standards of safety. This role reports to the Radiation Safety Officer or Manager.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do:

  • Provide health physics support to the organization.
  • Perform routine surveys and post areas accordingly.
  • Support the safe handling, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials within the laboratory by chemists and other staff.
  • Provide rad worker training including on-the-job training for laboratory staff on radiation monitoring instruments, frisking techniques, and other related procedures.
  • Perform daily calibration checks, maintain logs for radiation monitoring instruments, and ensure the inventory is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Manage the radioactive materials inventory, including receipt and tracking of radioactive material.
  • Conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with radiation safety standards.
  • Distribute and collect personal dosimeters and compile dosimetry data to monitor radiation exposure levels. Perform dose calculations.
  • Responding to radioactive material spills and other radiation emergencies, to include evaluating and executing corrective measures.
  • Investigate incidents and accidents involving radiation exposure and implement corrective actions as necessary.
  • Provide technical guidance to projects, programs, and personnel to ensure compliance with applicable rules, regulations, and laws.
  • Participate in team meetings and provide regular on-site presence.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in health physics, radiation protection, physical science, engineering, biological sciences, or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in operational radiation protection and/or health physics.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of radiation physics, principles and practices of radiation protection, survey instrumentation and analysis and applicable rules, best practices for safe use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment.
  • Experience measuring and evaluating radiological conditions affecting workers and the environment using radiation detection equipment.
  • Proficient computer literacy skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Graduate level degree in health physics, radiation protection, physical science, engineering, biological sciences, or related degree.
  • Certification or eligibility for certification by the American Board of Health Physics, the American Board of Medical Physics, the American Board of Radiology, or an equivalent certifying body
  • Strong knowledge of regulations and applicable standards (e.g. 10 CFR 20, 10 CFR 30).
  • Technical experience supporting dose assessment and radiation emergency response during drills and exercises.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work to be conducted in an office environment, laboratories, engineering R&D, and/or production environment.
  • Must be comfortable working within radiation environments.
  • Participate in radiological activities that require following extensive safety precautions and use of protective equipment, e.g., respirators and multiple layers.
  • Must be able to lift, push, and/or pull a maximum of 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work sitting and standing for extended periods, grasping/gripping, and fine motor control with hands.
  • Frequent use of computer with repetitive use of keyboard, mouse, and manual dexterity.
