High School Library Media Specialist

Job Title: Library Media Specialist

Reports to: Building Principal

Evaluated by: Building Principal

Job Goal: The goal of this position is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. To align the School Library Program with the mission, goals, and objectives of the school / school district.

  • Demonstrate aptitude or competence for assignment.
  • Empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, and skillful researchers.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to design and implement units of instruction, assess student learning.
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers as a partner in the instructional process.
  • Collaborates to design, teach, and assess learning experiences that incorporate inquiry learning, information literacies in their formats, critical thinking and self-assessment.
  • Provides and plans professional development.
  • Promotes instructional technology to improve learning.
  • Stays current in professional practices and educational research.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist students & teachers daily in the use of materials, equipment & technology in the library.
  • Order books and materials as needed.
  • Maintains schedule for common use of library.
  • Check out books and technology as needed.
  • Shelve returned books (cover or repair books as needed prior).
  • Maintain weekly overdue book reports.
  • Complete yearly inventory.
  • Rotate displays as needed & advertise for applicable clubs & fairs
  • Teaches students to build on prior knowledge to construct new knowledge.
  • Benchmarks the SLP to school, state, and national standards.
  • Fosters a creative, flexible environment so that the school library is an essential part of the learning community.
  • Develops and maintains resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, and instructional strategies of the school community.
  • Cooperates and networks with other libraries/agencies.
  • Establishes procedures for selection, acquisition, circulation, resource sharing of resources in all formats.
  • Evaluates, promotes and uses existing and emerging technologies to support teaching and learning.

Qualifications / Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, Bonding, and or Testing Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Master’s Degree is preferred.
  • A valid Colorado Certificate endorsed in area of assignment.
  • Such alternatives to the above as the Board of Education may find appropriate.

Physical Demands: Between sitting, standing, and walking throughout the day lifting up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis and 10 pounds on a frequent basis, occasionally stooping, kneeling, crouching, overhead reaching and fine motor activity, frequently sitting, standing, walking, balancing, reaching at desk and floor level, firm and simple grasping. The work requires constant seeing, hearing, and talking.

Work Environment: Work is performed in office, classroom and/or other educational setting.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Days / Terms of Employment: 186 Days / Nine-month position. Salary to be determined by the School Board of Education.
