Instructional Coach

Job Description

The Instructional Coach is an essential role within the School District of Brown Deer, responsible for leading and supporting the development and implementation of literacy and math programs and curricula across all content areas and grade levels. This role will work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and other educational staff to promote high-quality literacy and math instruction to foster a love of reading, writing, and mathematics among students. This role works closely with teachers to diagnose and remediate content area difficulties, and to assess and monitor student progress. Also, this role involves providing resources, professional development, and instructional coaching, as well as analyzing data to inform instruction while ensuring that literacy practices meet the diverse needs of all students.

The Instructional Coach will have a strong understanding of Act 20 and be ready to develop and implement effective, evidence-based reading instruction programs to help improve the reading proficiency of all students.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Education, Reading, or a related field, with a focus on literacy and/or mathematics.
  • State certification as a Reading Specialist is a plus.
  • A minimum of 3 years of evidenced impactful instructional coaching
  • A minimum of 5 years of teaching experience with a proven track record of effective literacy and mathematics instruction, preferably grades Pre-K - 5th.
  • Deep knowledge of literacy development, instructional strategies, and curriculum design.
  • Experience in adult education or professional development, with strong coaching and facilitation skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret and use data to inform instructional practices.
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with teachers, administrators, and community members.
  • Capacity to manage multiple projects and initiatives simultaneously with a high degree of organization and efficiency.
  • Familiarity with technology and literacy-related software applications.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Develop and implement effective literacy programs and interventions that align with Act 20, state standards, and district goals.
  • Provide ongoing professional development that is aligned to the district’s strategic plan and instructional coaching to teachers in best practices for literacy and mathematics instruction.
  • Collaborate with teachers to plan, model, and co-teach literacy lessons that incorporate evidence-based strategies.
  • Analyze district-wide literacy data to identify trends, strengths, and areas for improvement, and use this data to inform instructional decisions and program development.
  • Develop and implement (or support if in place) effective instructional plans for Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 (includes supporting the Reading Intervention program and staff)
  • Stay current with research on literacy and mathematics education and disseminate relevant findings to staff and administrators.
  • Coordinate the reading curriculum with other content areas and other support services with the school district.
    • Collaborate with the Director of Teaching and Learning, Director of Pupil Services, District Literacy Specialist, and Math Instructional Coach to plan and deliver summer professional development for new and returning staff members aligned to district initiatives and outcomes.
  • Work with various teams (administrators, teachers, grade-level) to facilitate analysis of data provided by diagnostics, common assessments, and formative assessments
  • Collaborate with schools and our Data Assessment Coordinator to monitor ELL Levels, administer the ACCESS test promptly, and reclassify students when needed
  • Collaborate with the Director of Teaching and Learning, as well as the Director of Pupil Services, principals, and instructional coaches to support and implement a comprehensive Equitable Multi-Systems of Support approach to literacy curriculum, instruction, and assessment
  • Support the training and proctoring of literacy and mathematics assessments including screening assessments, diagnostic assessments, progress monitoring assessments, formative assessments, and summative assessments
  • Support educators in developing communication plans with families related to assessment results
  • Order curriculum resources
  • Assist in conducting an annual evaluation of the reading curriculum
  • Coordinate with special education and ESL departments to ensure that literacy and mathematics instruction is inclusive and meets the needs of all learners.
  • Oversee Ampact reading tutors (duties include approving timesheets and monthly data meetings with Ampact manager)
  • Participate in the selection and adoption of literacy materials and resources.
  • Develop and maintain a district-wide literacy and mathematics resource library for use by teachers and students.
  • Engage with parents and community stakeholders to promote literacy and mathematics development outside of the school environment.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of literacy and mathematics initiatives and adjust based on feedback and outcomes in collaboration with the leadership team.
  • Act as a resource to classroom teachers to implement the reading and math curriculum
    • Observe and coach teachers to improve instructional planning, teaching practice, and the use of data, assessment, and instructional technology.
Specific Qualifications

  • Knowledge to critique and implement literacy and mathematics curricula to meet the needs of all learners and to design, implement, and evaluate evidence-based literacy instruction for all learners.
  • Understand how to select, and use valid, reliable, fair, and appropriate assessment tools to screen, diagnose, and measure student literacy achievement; inform instruction and evaluate interventions; participate in professional learning experiences; explain assessment results and advocate for appropriate literacy and mathematics practices to relevant stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of research, relevant theories, pedagogies, and essential concepts of diversity and equity; demonstrate and provide opportunities for understanding all forms of diversity as central to students' identities; create classrooms and schools that are inclusive and affirming; advocate for equity at school, district, and community levels
  • Recognizes the developmental needs of all learners and demonstrates the ability to collaborate with school personnel to use a variety of print and digital materials to engage and motivate all learners; integrate digital technologies in appropriate, safe, and effective ways; foster a positive climate that supports a literacy-rich learning environment.
