Position Overview
The Instructional Specialist has a critical role in the school by supporting each scholar in achieving their education goals through active support in the classrooms, both academically and behaviorally, in study halls, and in one-on-one tutoring assistance. The Student Support Specialist will be the primary onsite substitute teacher. The worksite and tour of duty for this position are located in the DC Jail which is an adult correctional facility.

Specific Responsibilities Will Include But Not Be Limited To
The DC Jail is the adult correctional facility located in DC. Maya Angelou PCS Academy at DC Jail works with incarcerated men and women ages 18-22 who have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). The school is located on the Central Treatment Facility (CTF), however, it serves students on the Central Detention Facility (CDF) side as well.

With the support of a wide circle of caring adults, students will develop the skills they need to make sound decisions and lead rewarding lives.

Specific Responsibilities Will Include But Not Be Limited To
- Provide academic support as a classroom assistant during assigned times in the classroom and study hall
- Work with scholars assigned to computer-based classes based on individual student schedule needs
- Support the Instructional Team as a substitute teacher where coverage is needed
- Attend all Instructional Team meetings
- Model and contribute to a school culture of hope and high expectations for achievement
- Participate in a wide range of school activities, including off-site retreats, and school celebrations.
- Other duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree in education or subject field (required)
- Experience working with incarcerated or opportunity youth (preferred)
- Ability to motivate others and work as part of a team
- Ability to think critically and analytically
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
