Description

Vacancy is in the Department of Families, Children, Youth, and Recreation. Under supervision, interviews applicants for various forms of assistance to obtain identifying information and to determine eligibility status in accordance with prescribed standards. Interviews applicants in office or home for various forms of general public service such as welfare and medical assistance. Interviews relatives and other responsible individuals, makes phone calls and inquiries by mail to determine financial resources available to clients and arranges methods and procedures of payments and partial payments. Determines on-going eligibility and performs related case services at the sub-professional level for specialized cases of a relatively short term and less complex nature such as those pending state aid. Makes referrals to and assists clients in use of other community resources. Keeps records of contact with clients, prepares statistics for daily and monthly reports and performs a variety of routine clerical duties. May perform duties at similar levels of difficulty in various fields of municipal service such as employment interviewing and placement, work on surveys and censuses. Performs related work as required.

This is a 1716 union position and the hours of work are 40 per week.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

The examination will consist of rating your training and experience as contained on your application and may include a written test, an oral test, a performance test, or a combination thereof. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. The examination is designed to measure:

Knowledge Of

  • Basic principles of municipal welfare programs.
  • Rules, regulations, and law affecting eligibility for general welfare and medical assistance.
  • General knowledge of community resources.
  • Techniques of interviewing and methods of establishing clients.
  • Financial status and eligibility for assistance.

Ability To

  • Maintain simple records and to perform a variety of routine clerical functions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, other employees, representatives of other agencies and the general public.

Qualifications

Open to all applicants who meet the following qualifications:

Graduation from a standard high school and one (1) year of work experience involving public contact.

OR

One (1) year of work experience as a Social Service Aide may be substituted for the above.

Bi-lingual (Spanish/English)

Other Information

If selected, you will be required to pass a physical examination administered by a City physician, a drug and alcohol screening examination, and a background check. If appointed, you will serve 3-12 months of probation. This examination and employment process is subject to all federal, state, and municipal laws, rules and regulations.
