LatinoJustice PRLDEF

John Garcia Legacy Summer Internship Program- CAP Program

About Latinojustice Prldef

Founded in 1972 as the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, LatinoJustice PRLDEF (LJP) has been a leading civil rights and social justice organization for five decades. LJP’s core issue areas include voting rights and redistricting, economic justice, immigrant rights, criminal legal system (policing and prison) reform, racial justice, leadership development, and issues related to Puerto Rico. LJP uses impact litigation, advocacy, and community education and engagement, among other strategies, to protect and advance the rights of Latinx and other communities of color. LJP has offices in New York City, Orlando, FL, and Austin, TX.

The Cesar A. Perales (CAP) Leadership Institute at LJP, sponsored by Nixon Peabody LLP, embodies three of LJP's long-term guiding principles: increasing the Latinx pipeline to law school, fostering civil rights awareness and engagement by developing future Latino leaders and engaging our youth in social justice movements. Our pipeline programs are designed for students as young as high school juniors and seniors through working professionals looking to better understand the law school application process and how to finance law school. They provide practical exercises and exposure to folks at all stages of the pipeline. Additionally, our programs provide our constituents with soft skills to better address challenges that Latinx and people of color face in academic and professional spaces. LJP’s headquarters office is located in New York City at 475 Riverside Drive in Manhattan, on 119th Street near the Columbia University Barnard College Morningside Heights campus.
