The Department of Surgery, Division of Transplant Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking to hire a Specialist to work with other members of our lab focused on translational research in cell transplantations. This position will be involved in developing novel methods for the insulin-secreting pancreatic islet cell transplantations to cure diabetes.

Responsibilities will include molecular biology-related techniques (RNA and DNA isolation, cDNA synthesis, PCR, RT-PCR, Next-Generation Sequencing, Protein expression analysis, Western blotting, Immunofluorescence staining, Chromatin Immunoprecipitation, and ELISA), cell culture and physiology-related techniques especially for the pancreatic islets (Islets isolation from rat pancreas, culturing and handling islets, Viability assay, Glucose-stimulated insulin response testing, Oxygen consumption rate measurement), animal techniques (feeding and care of rodents, basic animal techniques including tail vein injections, IP injections, and tissue harvesting), laboratory maintenance and organization, and other duties as assigned. It is our intention for the selected candidate to contribute meaningfully to projects, have opportunities to present their work, and co-author peer-reviewed publications.

Candidates who have experience in the following areas are preferred: experience in molecular biology and protein biochemistry (RNA and DNA isolation, cDNA synthesis, PCR, RT-PCR, Next-Generation Sequencing, Protein expression analysis, Western blotting, Immunofluorescence staining, Chromatin Immunoprecipitation, and ELISA, experience in tissue culture (cell line generation, maintenance), and experience in animal techniques (feeding and care of rodents, basic animal techniques including tail vein injections, IP injections, and tissue harvesting).

Specialists appointed at the Junior rank must have a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in biology, cellular and molecular biology, chemistry, bioengineering, or a related field or at least 4 years of research experience.

Specialist appointed at the Assistant rank must have a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in biology, cellular and molecular biology, chemistry, bioengineering, or a related field or baccalaureate degree with 3 or more years of research experience.

Specialist appointed at the Associate rank must have a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in biology, cellular and molecular biology, chemistry, bioengineering, or a related field or at least 5-10 years of research experience.

Specialist appointed at the Full rank must have a PhD (or equivalent degree) in biology, cellular and molecular biology, chemistry, bioengineering, or a related field or at least 10 or more years of research experience.

See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $51,300 - $181,800.
