ABOUT US:

OBJECTIVE OF THE POSITION:

The Laboratory Assistant I is an entry level position responsible for providing lab and operational support services to the Operations Team. This position reports to department supervisor(s) and takes direction from higher level technical personnel.

The ideal candidate will have experience working in potentially hazardous conditions (e.g., pathogens or chemicals). This individual will be well-trained to maintain safe operating conditions and will be passionate for doing work that contributes to the progress and well-being of the Biodesix team and clientele.

Required: Must embrace a culture of transparency, willing and open to share information and knowledge, excellent communication skills, on time delivery of complete and high-quality results. Communicates issues promptly to manager with follow through to a resolution.

REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:

This role shall comply, at a minimum, with the responsibilities and qualifications outlined in:

  • CLIA: Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Requirements, Title 42 Code of Federal Regulations Part 493
  • CAP: College of American Pathologists (CAP): All Common, General, Director Responsibility and Authority and all test-specific checklists
  • NYS CLEP: New York State Department of Health, Clinical Laboratory Evaluation Program (CLEP), New York State Public Health Law, Article 5 Title 5
  • ISO: International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 13485, Quality Management Systems, Requirements for Regulatory Purposes, 2016
  • All other applicable state and regulatory governing authorities including but not limited to: CA, PA, RI, MD


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Receiving and storage of clinical specimens (e.g., blood)
  • Accessioning specimens for clinical testing utilizing the computer-based laboratory information management system (LIMS)
  • Communicating specimen receipt issues and/or rejection information to the appropriate personnel,
  • Making labels, setting up tubes and testing supplies
  • Centrifuging clinical specimen blood tubes and transferring specimen plasma into aliquot tubes,
  • Populating daily specimen run list(s) using the LIMS and Microsoft Excel,
  • Work alongside technical staff to assist with chain of custody verification during testing,
  • Maintaining safety equipment
  • Washing laboratory glassware and plasticware,
  • Monitoring waste levels within biohazard waste bins (i.e., bin fullness) throughout the laboratory, as well as closing and replacing bins as needed,
  • Maintaining laboratory and stockroom cleanliness
  • Facilities maintenance
  • Other duties as assigned, and competency assessed, if applicable (e.g., laboratory equipment maintenance, reagent preparation, scanning and saving records)


COMPETENCY OR POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Compliance with immunization and other health record procedures
  • Train on Quality-required SOPs prior to performing tasks in the laboratory
  • Compliance with all laboratory safety procedures and good laboratory practices (GLP)
  • Ability to understand new concepts and apply them accurately
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions as well as organizational policies and procedures
  • Must have basic communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment
  • Competency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High-school diploma (certificate)
  • Experience in a laboratory setting preferred
