Laboratory Chemist

Basic Purpose:

Performs routine lab tests under the guidance of Laboratory Supervisor and/or Scientist. Develop methods for toxins using highly sensitive LC-MS/MS instruments and heavy metals using ICP-MS in biological fluids. Set up and monitor automated test procedures. Accession and perform extractions for LC-MS/MS analysis.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test

analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.

1. Work with the laboratory management (experienced method developer) in developing the LC-MS/MS and ICP-MS methods. The procedures and direction for method development will be provided. 
2. Complete the assigned method development steps as directed and provide the data and the feedback. 
3. Perform the validation as set forth by laboratory management. 
4. Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures (see department SOPs).
5. Follow CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and safety guidelines as described in their respective guidelines.
6. Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and all maintenance performed.
7. Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
8. Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results, correct the problems encountered or immediately notify the senior.
9. Adhere to the safety manual and safety protocol. Know the location/use of all applicable safety equipment.
10. May perform complexity testing with specific on-site training
11. Perform other duties as directed by supervisor.

Supervision Exercised:

Qualifications:

Education Required: BS/BA in Biology or Medical Laboratory Sciences.

LC-MS/MS experience and ICP-MS experience preferred and not required.

Work Experience: 1 - 3 year Clinical Laboratory experience preferred.

Other: Must have the ability to establish work priorities and handle several procedures simultaneously.

Must interact with other departments.

Contact with clients may be required, good customer service skills important.

Must protect patient confidentiality at all times.
