Laser Scientist


Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)

Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in physical science or related discipline. Three (3) years of full-time and substantial experience with optics.


Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. degree (or foreign equivalent) in physics/optics, experience with and expertise in nonlinear optics, ultrafast/ultrastable lasers, high vacuum equipment, electronics, programming. Experience with and interest in working with students is also desirable.


Brief Description of Duties:

Working together with the AMO groups in the department, the successful candidate will develop technical capabilities in the laser laboratories (e.g. design and build laser systems, vacuum chambers, electronics and data acquisition software), help maintain key research infrastructure and help mentoring undergraduate students on research projects. The position is comparable to a staff scientist position at a national laboratory or a research professor at many academic institutions.


Duties:


• Developing new tools for research in the AMO labs. This includes designing and building new lasers, vacuum chambers, electronics and computer programs for controlling experiments.

• Maintaining research infrastructure in the AMO labs, including laser systems, vacuum systems and data acquisition systems.

• Mentoring undergraduate students in research. Helping students carry out research projects during the academic year and in the summer.

• Contributing to the writing of research proposals.

• Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.


Special Notes:

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.


In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
