Managing Editor / Production Editor


Zando, a nimble new independent publisher, is looking for an experienced candidate to manage our publishing operations and editorial workflow.

Key Responsibilities:  


Reporting to Zando’s Head of Finance and Operations, you will oversee Zando’s publishing workflow capabilities. You will work closely with operations, editorial, production, design, and sales to set publishing and production schedules and manage the process that enables our titles to transition from manuscript to bound (and digital) books.


We are looking for someone who is entrepreneurial and has a high IQ for process -- someone who relishes the opportunity to help build internal processes from the ground up, as well as manage all facets of publishing operations for a new publishing house.


You will:

·       Own and manage Zando’s internal publication calendar, schedules, meetings, and overall editorial and production processes

·       Set and enforce deadlines for editorial team, tracking progress and managing schedules from manuscript transmittal to bound books in warehouse

·       Set and enforce deadlines for copy and sales information sheets, coordinating review process with all departments 

·       Work closely with Art Director to coordinate deadlines for seasonal design deliverables and individual titles

·       Oversee title management system, including metadata and ONIX feed 

·       Copyedit and proofread covers, jackets, metadata, sales information sheets, and miscellaneous marketing and publicity materials 

·       Manage communication with outside vendors throughout the production process, ensuring accurate transmittal of dates, specs, and timelines

·       Run production P&Ls and solicit first print quantities from senior leadership team

·       Work closely with Head of Sales on inventory and reprint management, monitoring inventory levels, opportunities and scheduling to ensure smooth delivery 

·       Identify workflow/system improvements

·       Coordinate review and approval of printer proofs with Publisher and Art Director 


 Requirements:


·       Minimum 5 years experience in a managing and/or production editorial or publishing operations

·       Working knowledge of title management software and workflow 

·       Extensive knowledge of publishing schedules, processes, and systems 

·       Third party contacts, knowledge of industry players is a plus

·       Expert copyediting and proofreading skills 

·       Experience pre-flighting files for printer release preferable 

·       Ability to handle multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously

·       Excellent organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail

·       Ability to work with and communicate with all levels of employees and management

·       Strong analytical and detail-oriented approach
