The Bullis Mechanic reports to the Transportation Supervisor and is responsible for the maintenance of Bullis vehicles, power equipment, and manual tools to meet the highest standards of customer service, safety, reliability, and efficiency promptly. This position also serves as a substitute bus driver, as needed. This position is classified as essential personnel and is expected to assist with the shared facilities' responsibilities, such as snow removal, parking details, etc.

Essential Functions

  • Assist with establishing short- and long-term goals for the Bullis vehicle fleet.
  • Ensure consistently high levels of maintenance for Bullis vehicles.
  • Prep busses for daily service, field trips, athletic transportation, and special assignments.
  • Inspect, remove trash, sweep, damp mop, sanitize bus interiors, and fuel all buses daily and as needed.
  • Maintain all Bullis vehicles, motorized and manual equipment, to achieve the highest reliability, functionality, safety, and appearance at the lowest possible life cycle cost.
  • In conjunction with the Transportation Supervisor, develop a comprehensive preventative maintenance program and schedule for each vehicle, ensuring scheduled work is done correctly, on time and economically, including all registration, inspection, and repair work required by law.
  • Evaluate appropriate method (in-hour or contracted) for maintenance & repairs, considering comparative costs, safety issues, downtime, and legal requirements. Competitively bid outside contractors as needed to ensure the best possible quality and value.
  • Maintain an accurate written record of all maintenance and other work done for each vehicle, including parts, supplies, and in-house labor costs.
  • Assist with analyzing each vehicle's records and costs annually, making decisions concerning vehicle retirement and replacement.
  • Assisted with long-range fleet planning, including planned retirement dates and replacement costs for each vehicle, based on life-cycle cost, reliability, and safety factors.
  • Provide effective inventory control for all transportation department tools, supplies, and equipment to reduce loss or theft of valuable items and routine supplies used for maintenance and repairs.
  • Provide detailed specifications for replacing transportation equipment, including all legal requirements and effective safety features.
  • Maintain departmental facilities, tools, and equipment to high appearance standards, efficiency, organization, and full compliance with all workplace safety regulations.
  • Maintain fuel logs, update them daily, and send reports to the Supervisor of Transportation monthly.
  • Maintain a safe and clean workplace.
  • Provide inventory reports of common repair parts for the Supervisor of Transportation.
  • Open campus gates each school morning, and inspect all campus roads, sidewalks, and building entrances before school to identify and correct any condition that might pose a safety hazard to students, staff, and visitors before their arrival.
  • Perform essential personnel duties, which included, but were not limited to, the shared facilities' responsibilities such as snow removal and parking detail during designated code white days.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Serve as a substitute bus driver, as needed.
  • Work traffic and parking detail, as required or requested by the Director of Facilities.
  • Other duties, as assigned by the manager.

Required Education, Experience, And Skills

  • High school, GED, or trade/technical school degree
  • Valid Maryland, D.C., or Virginia CDL (P&S) driver's license
  • Demonstrated long-term safe driving record
  • Substantial experience in motor vehicle/equipment mechanics, operation and maintenance
  • Ability to safely lift and move equipment, tools, and supplies up to 50 lbs. as needed.
  • Proficient verbal and interpersonal skills with faculty and staff. This includes an understanding of appropriate behavior around and with students.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records (paper-based and electronic)
  • Ability to work effectively and solve problems with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrates commitment to life-long learning and flexibility in work roles.
  • Demonstrates a high degree of reliability.

Preferred Education And Experience

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree preferred.
  • ASE certification preferred

This position is classified as Essential Personnel and must be accessible and available to work during emergencies or for unforeseen events, including but not limited to snow storms, power outages, storm damage, etc.
