Position Description

This position will report to the Head of Performance for operational and logistic matters and clinically through the Chief Medical Officer. They will provide medical care, guidance and consultation for all National team players across the federation. The Medical Director will work with the Head of Performance and Senior Sports Medicine Manager on day to day and in camp medical direction for injury prevention, health and safety and return to play matters. They will collaborate with all National team medical staff in addition to players clubs medical staff to optimize the care of the athlete. Additionally, they will ensure U.S. Soccer policies as well as tournament regulations such as FIFA, USADA, and others are adhered to and in compliance.

This individual will commit to U.S Soccer’s mission and strategy to maximize the health, safety and performance across all sport development programs at the organization.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design and delivery of U.S. Soccer standards in injury prevention, recognition, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation for all Men’s and Women’s Senior, Extended and Youth National Team Players
  • Lead recruitment, management and develop all full-time, part-time, and external consultant medical staff within the WNT, MNT, and YNT
  • Develop strong working relationships across the multi-disciplinary medical and performance teams sharing and informing best practice
  • Oversee the collection and compliance of medical data and injury surveillance in the electronic medical records in line with U.S Soccer standards
  • Be a leader in the development and implement the requirements for all aspects of delivery and data collection, cross the medical pathway including (but not limited to) player health, safety and wellbeing, rehabilitation, screening, injury recording, and reporting
  • Enhance and improve relationships with all National Team players club teams to ensure a bi-lateral exchange of medical data and information pre and post-national camps. Contribute to that culture across staff and all teams
  • Travel when appropriate and provide support to national teams (SNT, YNT, ENT) as and when required during games and training camps
  • Under the guidance of the Head of High Performance, Chief Medical Officer, and Director of Research and Innovation develop internal and external research opportunities
  • Contribute to the education of staff and coaches within the Federation, and those enrolled in Federation specific qualification pathways
  • Support and provide input in the allocation and development of a department budget as well as compliance
  • Work with and guide the Senior Manager, Sport Medicin in identifying and securing state of the art medical resources and equipment in providing care across all National team environments
  • Be a key collaborator in health and safety campaigns across the federation landscape
  • Coordinate and assist in leading journal club, webinars within the department as well as interdepartmental opportunities

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD/DO U.S. License with CAQSM or equivalent
  • Strong knowledge of soccer
  • Experience in leading a medical team of multidisciplinary skill sets
  • Minimum 5 years of clinical experience working within Soccer and/or other elite sport
  • Experience in managing and developing a medical staff and department
  • Knowledge and experience of medical requirements for adult and youth players
  • Balance of theoretical and applied experiences
  • Able and willing to travel up to 25% of the year
  • Able and willing to work non-traditional hours including evenings and weekends as needed
  • Capable of working in fast-paced and demanding environments
  • Must be able to connect “micro” details to the “macro” vision and mission
  • Proficient experience with Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook) and Video Editing
  • Excellent written and verbal communication combined with a professional demeanor

Desired Qualifications

  • Passion for soccer
  • Experience working in collaboration with coaches, sport scientists, and other support staff
  • Previous experience working with multi-stakeholder projects, data and research
  • Collaborator to Sports Medicine Academic Publications or a related field
  • Vast knowledge and expertise in medical equipment and technology
  • Excellent organizational, data collection, planning, and leadership skills
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish)
  • Thorough institutional knowledge of U.S. Soccer’s mission, goals, technical plan, policies, practices, and procedures
  • Previous experience with an elite team, club or national team
