Montrose’s Advisory and Specialty Services Division supports clients across public and private sectors to meet their unique and complex environmental demands. Our experts take a strategic approach to address broader environmental goals, from sustainability program development to data-driven decision-making using economics and ecology expertise, data management and validation, software strategy and implementation support, chemistry quality assurance, and EHSS auditing. A DAY IN THE LIFE

Our Nature Restoration Specialist position is geared towards an early-career employee with a broad technical skill set and capabilities. As a key member of the Ecosystem Service Economics team, this role will be responsible for a full range of activities, including:

  • In a remote work position in the US, a nature restoration specialist's core duties typically involve participation in fieldwork and data collection, combined with desktop research and analysis, to support restoration efforts while gaining experience in various aspects of habitat restoration and natural resource management.
  • Fieldwork activities include conducting biological surveys and habitat assessments under supervision, collecting plant, animal, sediment, and water specimens for monitoring purposes, and participating in hands-on restoration activities such as invasive species removal, native plantings/seedings, erosion control, etc.
  • Technical report writing typically includes gathering and organizing information on restoration sites, indigenous, naturalized, and invasive species, and environmental conditions and performing data analysis related to restoration planning.
  • The restoration work typically includes assisting with implementing mitigation plans, natural resource management plans, and habitat restoration plans.
  • Assist with environmental permitting including, but not limited to, wetland delineation, section 404, NEPA, and threatened & endangered species considerations.
  • Support project teams and provide leadership in advancing innovative solutions for projects, as required.
  • Participate in industry forums, as required, to enhance the sharing of best practices and lessons learned.
  • Contribute to the ongoing building of a high-performing team of technical experts and professionals to provide timely, coordinated, and comprehensive support to business clients.


Your Expertise And Skills

To perform this job successfully, individuals must be able to satisfactorily perform each duty and responsibility. The requirements below represent the required knowledge, skills, and/or abilities.

  • We seek a highly collaborative individual with a strong natural sciences background, knowledge, and experience in biodiversity and ecology planning, programs, and strategies.
  • You will work with various environmental discipline teams, such as human health and ecological risk assessors, site assessment and remediation specialists, sustainability experts, and community economic development planners.
  • A Bachelor's or Master’s degree focused on ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, or a related natural sciences discipline from a recognized institution is required. Relevant coursework in areas such as botany, conservation biology, geospatial analysis, hydrology, soil science, and wildlife management are beneficial.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • 2-5 years + of experience related to environmental restoration or natural resource management is desirable.
  • Knowledge of US and Canadian regulatory processes and land conservation guidelines, particularly as they are related to biodiversity, site restoration, and resource management, is highly desirable.
  • This technical position offers the specialist the opportunity to develop skills and gain experience under the guidance of more senior staff before potentially advancing to higher levels with more independent responsibilities.
  • Specific competencies that are highly relevant include:
    • Experience with coastal resiliency and living shorelines
    • Experience with riparian, wetlands, lacustrine, estuary, coastal-strand, and/or upland restoration including restoration planning and implementation
    • Experience with native propagule collection (seed, cutting, division) and increase, including nursery propagation and cultivation
    • Native, naturalized, and introduced plant identification including systematic botany and genetic informatics (genotypic and phenotypic)
    • Determination and/or interpretation of ecotypic and biogeographic transfer zones
    • Experience with environmental permitting including, but not limited to, wetland delineation, section 404, NEPA, and threatened & endangered species
    • On-site and remote monitoring using GIS and related spatial tools
    • Application/interpretation of ArcGIS
    • Sediment and/or water sampling
    • Experience with aquatic ecology/marine biology
    • Lab experience
