The Network Administrator works as part of a team under the supervision of the Assistant Director, Network and Systems Infrastructure. Responsible for physical installation and maintenance of both wired and wireless networking equipment. The Network Administrator must have a working knowledge of networking media, including optical. Troubleshooting network problems, performing upgrades, and other routine network maintenance tasks will be required. The Network Administrator must be able to perform simple networking troubleshooting for most operating systems and network-related hardware.


Job Duties

  • The Network Administrator is considered a critical employee but will only receive that designation as needed. As a critical employee, the Network Administrator may be required to work even when the university officially closes 
  • Must be able to troubleshoot network problems using log files, sniffers, and other diagnostic tools 
  • Must have knowledge of TCP/IP, VLANs and demonstrate the use of IP troubleshooting tools such as, but not limited to, ping, traceroute, and netstat. 
  • Contribute to the daily operation of the data networks, including activities such as: 
  • Respond to network problems 
  • Program network infrastructure devices 
  • Analyze and optimize network performance and security 
  • Ensure that all equipment and software are maintained in an operational state 
  • Report maintenance needs to appropriate maintenance providers and arrange for the replacement of failed units .
  • The Network Administrator must communicate and coordinate with the other Technology Services groups and the Technology Services Help Desk staff. 
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong documentation skills are also required.
  • The Network Administrator will be called upon to support System Programmers, Telecommunications, and Desktop Support staff in computer labs and offices and must maintain confidentiality and security at all times. 
  • Work with vendor representatives to resolve questions/problems or develop new technologies. 
  • Stay abreast of current trends in the use of network technology in the University environment by attending conferences, professional meetings, and seminars and by reading appropriate journals. Incorporate at Samford the ideas gained by these activities. 
  • Continually enhance own technical and professional skills 
  • Perform additional duties as required.


Qualifications

  •  AA/AS degree in computer science or two (2) years of related networking experience in:
  • Installation and troubleshooting of network hardware (e.g., switches, routers, firewalls)
  • Troubleshooting and knowledge of TCP/IP protocols
  • Knowledge and support of wireless environments and wireless security technologies
  • Knowledge and support of software firewalls
  • Ability to implement basic LANs/WANs and associated systems


Preferred Qualifications

  • BA or BS degree in a technical discipline such as Engineering or Computer Science
  • Three (3) or more years of experience in a large network environment
  • Knowledge of OS/NOS/IOS/NX-OS
  • NOC or high volume call-center experience
  • Work experience with enterprise or carrier-class datacenter environments
  • Knowledge and support of Cisco routers and switches
  • Have or obtain CCNA/CCNP or equivalent industry certification within six (6) months
