The Editor works collaboratively with other members of the newsletter department and cross-functionally with other departments to develop and execute The New Yorker’s newsletter strategy and to create newsletters that best serve The New Yorker’s goals. As such, the Editor must possess excellent writing, editing, and organizational skills; experience producing and deploying e-mail newsletters; and a deep fluency in the issues regularly covered by The New Yorker. This is a Guild position.

  • Stay current on everything The New Yorker publishes in order to creatively deliver top-tier reader experiences in the in-box, with the primary goal of deepening engagement.
  • Play a key role in operations for the flagship daily newsletter, including editorial planning, communication with stakeholders, writing and editing, fact-checking, production, and A/B testing.
  • Edit copy for fit, context, and style, and insure that copy is error-free, with an eye to maintaining the consistency of a product’s editorial tone and coverage.
  • Work collaboratively across the newsroom to understand editorial priorities and respond to developing stories. Conceptualize, solicit, and edit contributions from staff members across the organization.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with audience development, email strategy, consumer marketing, and product partners on initiatives related to the evolution and refinement of New Yorker newsletter strategy.
  • Identify opportunities to broaden the reach of our newsletter program.
  • Other project- and content-management tasks relevant to the team.
  • Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Five to seven years in a journalism role; experience with e-mail newsletters required.
  • A deep understanding of the media landscape and a strong news sense.
  • Ability to lead multiple projects at once and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • A demonstrated ability to write engaging copy across a range of topics.
  • Excellent communication skills and experience working collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Experience juggling multiple deadlines per day and reacting to the demands of the news cycle.
  • Knowledge of newsletter best practices, both established and emerging.
  • Strong familiarity with analytics and comfort using data to inform decision-making.
  • Strong familiarity with basic HTML and Adobe creative suite.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ambitious, proactive, and a quick learner.
  • A strong knowledge of and interest in the style and voice of The New Yorker.
  • Willingness to work occasional early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
