About the Facility - Mike O-Callaghan Military Center (Nellis AFB)

The Nellis AFB, a part of the United States Air Force's Air Combat Command, is located approximately eight miles northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The base itself covers more than 14,000 acres, while the total land area occupied by Nellis, and its restricted ranges, is about 5,000 square miles. An additional 7,700 miles of airspace north and east of the restricted ranges are also available for military flight operations. The Nellis workforce of about 13,400 military, civilians, and contractors makes it one of the largest single employers in Southern Nevada. The total military population numbers more than 40,000, including family members and military retirees in the area.

Mental Health NP - RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)

  • The Mental Health Nurse Practitioner shall perform psychiatric evaluations and treatment. Will examine, evaluate, diagnose, and treat psychiatric disorders; will manage and direct psychiatric services.
  • Will conduct intake evaluations on a routine and emergency basis including Commander-directed mental health evaluations by applicable USAF and DoD guidelines.
  • Shall prepare and review case histories and obtain and evaluate data through interviews.
  • Will prescribe and evaluate the effectiveness of a wide range of therapeutic measures. The Nurse Practitioner will integrate findings and formulate clinical information to establish a diagnosis in association with criteria set down in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders of the American Psychiatric Association.
  • Will determine the appropriate treatment setting and provide a variety of treatment modalities in an outpatient setting, which include psychopharmacology and traditional interactive psychotherapies. Will refer, coordinate, and facilitate inpatient admissions for admission to psychiatric or partial hospitalization facilities.
  • Will provide psychiatric consultation to mental health flight providers and other medical providers for patients who present with complicated psychiatric conditions. Will provide psychiatric liaison services for active-duty military patients hospitalized in an inpatient psychiatric facility.
  • The Mental Health Nurse Practitioner will provide psychiatric consultation and recommendations to the installation's medical, legal, and military leadership, and is therefore recognized as the subject matter expert in respect of the psychiatry program regarding issues related to active duty patient's fitness/suitability, discipline, retraining, reassignment, granting of security clearances and special duty that requires a high degree of reliability and trust (e.g. working with weapon systems, flying operations and other sensitive duties).
  • The Nurse Practitioner will provide psychiatric training for the mental health flight and other physicians as requested by the Chief of Hospital Services, the Mental Health Flight Commander, and/or the Mental Health element Chief.

Mental Health Nurse Practitioner - REQUIREMENTS

  • Degree/Education: Master's or doctoral degree in nursing. Graduate from an academic program, within the nursing specialty field of study that is accredited by a regional or national nursing accrediting agency recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
  • Certifications: Shall hold and maintain BLS and ACLS certification. Must be through the American Heart Association or client guidelines. Certified in the specialty as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), or the recognized national nursing certification organization for the specialty area of practice as appropriate.
  • Experience: Must have at least 5 years' experience working in a mental health clinic.
  • Board Certification: Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
  • Licensure: Maintain an active, valid, current, and unrestricted license (with no limitations, stipulations, or pending adverse actions) to practice nursing as a Nurse Practitioner from any state or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • Security: Must possess the ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.
