ABOUT THE POSITION

Under general supervision, an Official Court Reporter reports and transcribes the verbatim stenographic record of official court proceedings, prepares and certifies transcripts, and at the direction of the Court, reads the record aloud in court in accordance with the law. These functions are usually performed in the courtroom; however, the needs of the Court may require reporting to be done in judicial chambers, conference rooms, jury assembly rooms, or in rare circumstances, off-site locations. Official Court Reporters are responsible for providing their own machine, computer equipment and software. Preparation of transcripts is accomplished outside of regular working hours. Successful applicants will be expected to provide Realtime transcription, including the ability to connect to any and all litigation support software (i.e., CaseView).


Examples of Duties

Duties for the classification may include, but are not limited to:


  • Reports verbatim testimony and court proceedings using stenographic equipment and Computer Aided Transcription (CAT); asks Judicial Officer for clarification of instructions, orders, or takes other actions to properly note the official court record.
  • Reads back all or portions of the official court proceedings.
  • Prepares transcripts; reviews and certifies transcripts of court proceedings.
  • Maintains a variety of electronic and paper files of the court record for which the court reporter is directly responsible; prepares daily transcripts as needed; and provides transcripts of proceedings on request of parties or by the court, pursuant to applicable codes.
  • Depending on assignment, ensures Realtime text provided is compatible with litigation support software.
  • May change assignments on short notice or work temporary assignments at other Justice Centers.


Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

Six (6) months experience as a Pro Tempore or Official Court Reporter with a Superior Court; OR one (1) year experience as a Certified Shorthand Reporter. Plus, computer-aided transcription capability and realtime capability.



LICENSE REQUIREMENT

Passage of the State of California Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) Examinations and possession of a valid California CSR License. With acceptable history with the CSR Board of California or the District Court of Appeal.


Possession of or ability to obtain a California driver's license by date of appointment.



HIGHLY DESIREABLE

(a) Worked as a pro tempore reporter for Orange County Superior Court.

(b) Possession of a Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification.

(c) Broad reporting experience (e.g., preliminary hearings, civil trials, criminal trials, complex litigation, complex criminal proceedings, juvenile proceedings, appeal transcripts, special transcripts, etc.)

(d) Experience in preparing daily transcripts.

(e) Prepared transcripts for the District Court of Appeal or any other appellate courts.

(f) Registered Merit Reporter certification (RMR).

(g) Realtime Reporting certification (CRR).

(h) California Certificate in Realtime Reporting (CCRR)

(i) Certified Realtime Generalist (CRG)



PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE OF

Techniques and procedures of court reporting and use of related materials and equipment.

Specialized vocabulary used in legal proceedings.

Legal practices, courtroom procedures and protocol.

English grammar and usage.

Goals and responsibilities of the judicial system, including functions and relationships of limited and general jurisdictions of the Superior Court, Courts of Appeal, California Supreme Court, and the Federal Court system.

Technical and medical terminology used by participants in court proceedings.

Types of cases and proceedings heard in the Superior Court.



PREFERRED ABILITY OF

Accurately report court proceedings, prepare printed transcripts, and meet deadlines as required by the Superior Court and the Court of Appeals.

Coordinate work with judicial, support, and administrative staff and work within court policies, procedures, and systems.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with judicial officers, co-workers, attorneys, and other court staff, both individually and in group settings.

Work cooperatively under time constraints and exacting professional and legal standards.

Transfer and/or travel to various departments at different locations on short notice.

Deal tactfully with the public and with other court personnel.

Use personal computer including word processing and other software.

Use Computer-Aided Transcription (CAT) and ability to provide computer readable disk upon request (may be required for some positions).

Realtime Reporting capability (may be required for some positions).

Maintain the physical and mental requirements described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this class.

Sit and record verbatim proceedings accurately at sustained speed and duration for prolonged periods of time.

Hear well enough to understand and record verbatim testimony with competing background noise.

Use hands and wrists to keyboard on a stenographic machine.

Reach with hands and arms; see well enough to proofread transcripts.

Use written and oral communication skills.

Read and interpret data, information, and documents.

Analyze and solve problems.

Observe and interpret situations.

Work with frequent interruptions.
