Salary: $20.00/hour

Benefits: OPS employees working 32 or more hours per week may obtain health insurance coverage for $25 biweekly for Single Coverage or $90 biweekly for Family Coverage.

Working Hours: Up to 40 hours per week with schedule variations based on season and workload. Some overtime and travel is required.

Employment in this position is contingent upon a satisfactory criminal history record check to be completed prior to or within the first thirty days of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in one of the biological, marine, or environmental sciences and one year of professional experience preferred.

Professional experience directly related to the Duties and Responsibilities provided herein may substitute for the Bachelor of Science degree on a year for year basis.

A valid driver’s license is required.

Description Of Duties

Special Activity Licenses

  • Review and process Special Activity License applications for scientific research, education, and exhibition activities, and activities that involve the use of non-conforming gear.
  • Send requests for additional information, work with applicants to resolve problems, draft licenses, and recommend issuance or denial of licenses as appropriate.
  • Maintain a Special Activity License database.
  • Monitor compliance with terms and conditions of issued licenses pursuant to Rule 68B-8, Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.).

Trap Retrieval Program

  • Assist in the implementation of the Commission’s spiny lobster, stone crab and blue crab trap retrieval programs and trap debris removal program pursuant to s. 379.2424, Florida Statutes (F.S.), s. 379.368, F.S., and Rule 68B-55, F.A.C.
  • Serve as a Commission observer onboard contracted commercial fishing vessels during trap retrieval operations statewide.
  • Accurately record and maintain trap retrieval data.
  • Enter trap retrieval data in an online database.
  • Prepare and send certified mail regarding the assessment of trap retrieval fees.

Examples Of Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Experience with database input and management.
  • Ability to use personal computers effectively and efficiently, including familiarity with Microsoft Office software.
  • Knowledge of terminology, principles, and analytical techniques of the physical or natural sciences.
  • Ability to collect and interpret scientific or technical data.
  • Ability to organize data in logical format for presentation in reports, documents, and other written materials.
  • Ability to use correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply applicable rules, regulation, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow legislative policy direction as established in Florida Statutes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to utilize problem solving techniques.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to organize and maintain filing systems.
  • Ability to work extended hours in the field on commercial fishing vessels, including holidays and weekends as required.
  • Ability to work in the field in harsh conditions (extreme heat, cold, humidity, heavy seas, etc.).
  • Ability to travel frequently and for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Licensure, Certification Or Registration Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
