Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Optician is responsible for providing excellent patient care by assisting with eyewear selection, performing prescription analysis, and ensuring proper fit and comfort of eyeglasses. This role involves educating patients on lens materials, performing accurate measurements, and maintaining the optical area.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Patient Education: Educate patients about lens materials, products, and designs to help them make informed choices.
  • Prescription Analysis: Interpret and transpose prescriptions to ensure accurate lens creation.
  • Frame Selection: Recommend suitable eyeglass frames to patients based on their prescriptions and lifestyle requirements.
  • Eyewear Design: Design complete eyewear products by integrating frame design elements, lens materials, and optics.
  • Adjustments and Repairs: Adjust and repair eyeglass frames to ensure proper alignment, comfortable fit, and functional vision. Provide instructions on the proper wear and care of eyeglasses.
  • Accurate Measurements: Perform precise measurements of lens power, pupillary distance, multifocal segment height, lens base curve, vertex distance, and prism power.
  • Prescription Verification: Verify the accuracy of lens prescriptions for ordered lenses.
  • Frame Display Maintenance: Organize and maintain the frame display area throughout the workday.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other tasks and duties as assigned, including the authorization of insurance benefits and eligibility for incoming patients.
  • Eyewear Dispensing: Dispense eyewear and troubleshoot any issues that may arise.
  • Pre-Examination Testing: Administer patient pre-examination testing, including auto-refraction and non-contact tonometry (NCT), and perform frame repairs.
  • Order Placement: Place orders for patients' glasses.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.
  • Experience: Previous experience as an optician or in a related field is preferred.
  • Skills: Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups.
  • Professionalism: A high standard of professionalism, ethics, and conduct is expected in speech, manner, attitude, and appearance at all times.
  • Adaptability: Ability to handle changing situations and work in a stressful environment.

  • Completion of an accredited optician training program is required.
  • Certification by the American Board of Opticianry (ABO) is required.
