Optometry Assistant

General Summary

The Optometric Assistant will provide clerical support, perform vision exams, document patient history, clean equipment and assist the Optometrist as necessary. The Optometric Assistant demonstrates excellence in customer service during interactions with patients, employees and managers in a professional, ethical and knowledgeable fashion. Maintains a safe, clean and organized work environment.

Education

Minimum Education, Training & Experience (includes licenses or certifications):

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Optometric training or certification preferred
  • BLS certification required

Experience

  • One year of experience working in a busy office setting.
  • One year of experience working in a medical setting preferred

  • Requires critical thinking skills, ability to make good decisions, listen and accept advice from others, demonstrate maturity and good judgement and the ability to work with regular supervision.
  • Promote/deliver excellent customer service to patients, visitors and coworkers.
  • Perform various sensory requirements such as: vision, touch, manual dexterity, fine motor skills, etc. to perform tasks using computers, computer screens, key boards, copiers, faxes, and other office equipment.
  • Demonstrate positive and effective interpersonal and communication skills with colleagues, vendors, visitors, etc.
  • Maintain a calm and composed manner in emergency/stressful situations, taking appropriate action as necessary.
  • Demonstrates attention to detail, follows oral and written instruction precisely, and maintains a high degree of accuracy, risk of error could result in significant monetary loss and hardship for KVH.
  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking and time management skills with ability to anticipate tasks and prioritize assignments.
  • Work in a stressful/demanding environment and take appropriate action to ensure accurate and high quality of work produced, ability to cope with physical demands of the job.
  • Experience with using everyday computer electronic technology tools (e.g., email, spreadsheets, word processing, voicemail, internet/intranet) and organize and store work-related data. Plus, calculator, copier, fax, etc.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Programs including: Excel and Word are essential.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, and general math skills.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.

General Accountabilities And Essential Functions

  • Assist optometrist during examination as needed.
  • Order supplies and exam equipment as required
  • Assist in other clinic functions as necessary, including making appointments, preparing charts, answering phones or any other general duty as needed.
  • Exhibit initiative and teamwork in performing all daily tasks
  • Assisting patients select eyeglass frames, answer questions about available sizes and colors.
  • Measuring bifocal and progressive addition heights on patient selected frames.
  • Fill out and submit optical lab orders and check progress of orders and document in chart date they will arrive.
  • Verify prescription accuracy with a lensometer of finished glasses, after delivery from optical lab.
  • Notifying patients that glasses are complete and set up dispensing time.
  • Order trial contact lenses for patients and verifying order is correct.
  • Sanitize eyeglass frames with hydrogen peroxide or other appropriate disinfectant after patients try them on.
  • Assist with minor repairs on eyeglasses including but not limited to: replacing lost screws, nose pads and tightening loose screws.
  • Provide information on various options of eyeglasses (lens tints, lens coatings, various lens materials, etc.).
  • Perform pre-exam tests including: near/distance visual acuity with and without glasses.
  • Stereo Fly test for binocularity, color vision test, pupillary distance measurement, blood pressure measurement.
  • Screen patients and record patient’s chief complaint, history and family history (macular degeneration, glaucoma or other eye disease), systemic medications, eye medications and visual demands of patient’s occupation
  • Operate equipment such as: Optos Monaco Retina Scanner, Humphrey Matrix Visual Fields Analyzer, Synemed fundus camera, autorefractor.
  • Maintain frame inventory and reordering frames as needed, labeling frames by name, color, size, cost.
  • Meet with frame company representatives of companies that KVH has accounts with and ordering new styles.
  • Attends departmental and hospital required meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
