Job Summary:

The Paralegal will play a crucial role in supporting the legal team with all aspects of litigation and dispute resolution related to the operations of our medical laboratory. This position requires a highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive individual who can manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of legal processes, excellent research and communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with various departments within the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

Litigation Support:

  • Case Management: Assist attorneys in managing litigation cases from inception to resolution, including case tracking, document management, and maintaining case files.
  • Discovery: Coordinate and manage the discovery process, including drafting, reviewing, and responding to discovery requests, subpoenas, and document production.
  • Court Filings: Prepare and file legal documents with state and federal courts, ensuring compliance with court rules and deadlines.
  • Legal Research: Conduct legal research on relevant laws, regulations, and case precedents to support litigation strategies and case preparation.
  • Pleadings and Motions: Draft and review pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal documents under the supervision of attorneys.
  • Depositions: Organize and prepare for depositions, including scheduling, coordinating with witnesses, and managing exhibits.
  • Trial Preparation: Assist in trial preparation, including organizing trial binders, preparing exhibits, coordinating witness logistics, and attending trial as needed.

Document Management:

  • Calendaring and Record Keeping: Maintain organized and up-to-date case files, calendaring deadlines, and organizing electronic and physical documents.
  • Document Review: Review and analyze documents for relevance, privilege, and confidentiality.
  • Database Management: Utilize litigation support software and databases to manage and track documents, evidence, and case-related information.

Communication and Coordination:

  • Client Interaction: Serve as a liaison between attorneys, clients, and external parties, ensuring effective communication and coordination.
  • Interdepartmental Collaboration: Collaborate with various departments within the organization, including compliance, risk management, and operations, to gather information and support litigation efforts.
  • Meeting Coordination: Schedule and coordinate meetings, conference calls, and other litigation-related events.

Compliance and Risk Management:

  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and company policies related to litigation and dispute resolution.
  • Risk Mitigation: Assist in identifying and mitigating potential legal risks associated with the laboratory’s operations.
  • Policy Development: Support the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to litigation and legal compliance.

Administrative Support:

  • Administrative Tasks: Provide general administrative support to the legal team, including managing calendars, scheduling appointments, and handling correspondence.


Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum Associates degree in paralegal studies or Certified Paralegal (NFPA’s PCCE or PACE).
  • Minimum of 5 years experience as a litigation paralegal.
  • Must have experience working for a healthcare law firm or medical laboratory setting. Will consider candidates working for health insurance companies.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Legal Knowledge: Strong understanding of legal processes, court procedures, and litigation practices.
  • Research Skills: Proficient in legal research using online databases and legal research tools.
  • Writing Skills: Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to draft clear and concise legal documents.
  • Organizational Skills: Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Calendaring and Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with attorneys, clients, and other stakeholders.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and legal software applications (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis, CaseMap).
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and strategically.
  • Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, as well as independently with minimal supervision.
