Paralegal

Job Description

Position Description Summary:

The paralegal will provide a variety of paralegal support to AUSAs. The paralegal will work with the AUSA during the progress of the case, providing administrative assistance, organizing documents and data gathered in an investigation or litigation, and maintaining the chain of custody of all information collected. The paralegal may also assist attorneys in evaluating complaints and referrals regarding potential unlawful conduct; conducting research regarding potential investigative targets and unlawful schemes; gathering and analyzing health care claims data, opioid prescribing or dispensing data, and other datasets and documents; preparing a digest of cited or relevant legal authorities; reading, annotating, and summarizing transcripts or other factual sources; obtaining financial and statistical information, agency records, court records, and other public records; drafting demands for data, documents, and information, research reports, memoranda, correspondence, and pleadings; cite-checking, proof-reading, and filing pleadings and other court documents; interviewing or attending interviews of potential witnesses; and preparing interview reports. The paralegal may also help prepare for trial by attending pre-trial meetings, organizing exhibits, reviewing exhibits and other case materials for accuracy and completeness, and requesting further information to correct deficiencies. The paralegal may assist during and after trial by supporting the trial team with any needed administrative or organizational tasks and by preparing summaries of testimony and depositions. The paralegal will provide case assistance using various software applications, including CaseView to open, close and update cases. The paralegal may also use PowerPoint, excel, or other applications to prepare documents, charts, and visual materials for use in meetings with opposing counsel, briefs, or at trial.

Responsibilities:

  • Reviews incoming material and independently determines proper processing.
  • Analyzes and evaluates complaints and referrals regarding potential unlawful conduct.
  • Obtains needed information from appropriate agencies and prepares and submits drafted legal documents to the appropriate AUSA.
  • Analyzes and prepares summaries of datasets and documents, including healthcare claims data, opioid prescribing or dispensing data, and financial information.
  • Identifies potential witnesses, interviews, or attends interviews of potential witnesses, and prepares written reports memorializing interviews.
  • Prepares responsive documents with limited instructions from the AUSA.
  • Verifies citations and legal authorities contained in legal documents using original and online resources. Ensures citations are complete and consistent with source material.
  • Develops tables of contents, tables of authorities, and indices to motions and briefs in accordance with established format.
  • Scans and helps process information gathered in investigations and discovery in coordination with AUSA. Provides discovery to opposing counsel.
  • Establishes and maintains a variety of files. Searches legal reference files for information needed by AUSA. Separates, screens, selects, assembles, and organizes files and records material for disposition or transfer to records depository in accordance with established procedures.
  • Responsible for docketing of all cases for the assigned attorneys into office’s case management system (CaseView).
  • Searches databases for required information as necessary.
  • Reviews documents in databases including, but not limited to, Relativity and Eclipse.
  • Maintains calendar of assigned active cases. Tracks filing and hearing dates. Develops and maintains suspense system for ongoing cases and informs the AUSA of pending dates and deadlines. Maintains calendar(s) of the AUSA(s) and provides reminders of commitments and court appearances.
  • Produces a variety of written documents and materials utilizing a wide range of office software applications. Ensures proper format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.

Skills & Experience:

  • The contractor shall have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties as specified herein.
  • The contractor will be expected to be a full and active participant in extensive investigation and litigation support activities, both pre-complaint, pre-trial, during trial, and post-trial.
  • The anticipated work could include significant and detailed organization of case files and discovery work.
  • The anticipated work would also include significant motion support, including extensive file organization.
  • Tasks will likely include imaging and media duplication as well.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills are essential.
  • Relevant experience, of at least five years, with both pre-trial and trial litigation support is required.
  • The requested paralegal should have skill in electronic databases for the organization and presentation of evidence.
  • Knowledge and working experience with CaseView Management System and Understanding of the Federal Rule of Civil Procedures

Education:

A certificate, associate's, or bachelor’s degree in paralegal-related studies is preferred
