Phlebotomist - Casual

Summary

This position functions as a liaison between the laboratory and patients. The phlebotomist performs specimen collection, specimen processing, data entry and limited laboratory testing. This position is responsible for blood collections, by venipuncture and capillary technique, and non-blood collections from patients of all age groups. Ability to work in a team environment and provide excellent customer service a must.

Typical Schedule

Casual position with no guaranteed hours.

Must be available to work two shifts per month as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school degree or equivalent is required.
  • Prior experience in phlebotomy, laboratory or health care related job is preferred.
  • Proficiency in starting IV’s is preferred.

Responsibilities Include

  • Collecting and processing specimens using appropriate technique.
  • Performing testing and verifying assay/analyzer performance.
  • Perming testing in any of the following areas: hematology, coagulation, microbiology, chemistry, urinalysis and transfusion medicine.
  • Documenting and communicating lab test results thoroughly and accurately.
  • Performing and documenting assay/analyzer maintenance.

  • Ability to multitask, work under pressure while maintaining quality standards.
  • Ability to use time efficiently.
  • Skilled in both verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with patients, family members and co-workers.
  • Knowledge and understanding of computer systems including EMR, Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrates awareness of organizational goals/strategic plan in all daily work environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality per policy.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision as well as with a team.
  • Ability to solve problems efficiently.
