Position Overview

The Police Sergeant will lead and manage law enforcement operations within the Police Department. The Police Sergeant will play a vital role in maintaining public safety, overseeing the daily activities of Police Officers, civilian support staff, and fostering positive community relations. This position requires a skilled leader capable of effectively balancing administrative responsibilities with hands-on policing in a close-knit environment.

General Summary

  • Lead a team of sworn officers, providing guidance, mentorship, and training to ensure optimal performance and professional growth.
  • Coordinate, direct, and supervise department efforts in the enforcement of laws, ordinances, and regulations in the prevention of crime and preservation of public safety and quality of life.
  • Direct supervision of Police Department non-sworn personnel working with the Sheriff’s Department and liaise with Sheriff's supervisors and executives.
  • Direct supervision of police department support staff.
  • Set clear expectations and uphold high standards for conduct, performance, and adherence to ethical principles within the department.
  • Foster a cohesive work atmosphere that encourages teamwork, respect, and collaboration among personnel.
  • Oversee and participate in patrol operations, investigations, and emergency response as necessary.
  • Ensure strict enforcement of laws, regulations, and agency protocols while maintaining a proactive approach to community policing.
  • Review incident reports, evidence, and officer interactions to ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with community members, local businesses, and organizations to bolster public trust and collaboration.
  • Address community concerns promptly and collaborate on initiatives aimed at enhancing neighborhood safety and overall quality of life.
  • Manage scheduling, resource allocation, and shift assignments to maintain necessary coverage.
  • Collaborate closely with other city department leaders to formulate and implement policies and procedures aligning with city goals and values.
  • Identify training requirements for officers and facilitate relevant professional development opportunities.
  • Ensure officers remain updated on current laws, regulations, and best practices through ongoing training initiatives.
  • Coordinate and lead responses to critical incidents and emergencies, working in tandem with officers to ensure efficient and effective resolution.
  • Demonstrate composure under pressure while making well-informed decisions in accordance with established protocols.
  • Provides day-to-day leadership and works with staff to ensure a high-performance, customer service-oriented work environment that supports achieving City and departmental mission, objectives, and service standards.
  • Enforces the maintenance of safe working conditions and ensures safe work practices are followed by staff.
  • Provides leadership to ensure a fair and open work environment in accordance with the City's commitment to equal employment opportunity.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminology, Law Enforcement, Public Administration, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Active California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.
  • Possession of a California POST Intermediate Certificate or higher
  • Ten (10) years of law enforcement experience, including a minimum of three (3) years law enforcement supervisory or team leader experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered.
  • Valid California class “C” driver's license.
