Job Description
This is a versatile coach-player role, where you will edit and plan a bit each day, but also jump in and write on busy news days and track major policy areas as needed. This hybrid role will oversee a beat tied to CNBC’s political coverage while also handling some editing each day.

Job Description

What You’ll Do
- Help improve and sustain CNBC’s coverage of politics, policy and how Washington interacts with Wall Street.
- Edit breaking news as it happens and work closely with the reporter to move fast, accurate copy as stories unfold.
- Help reporters identify and sharpen business angles on traditional political subjects.
- Write headlines and format stories with an eye to SEO
- Help plan future coverage on a rolling basis and maintain a calendar of political events, hearings, cases and deadlines.
- Step in to write breaking news after hours if needed, or jump in to pick up stories on busy news days.
- Work in a CNBC bureau in Washington, DC or in Englewood Cliffs, N.J. with a hybrid in-office schedule.
What you’ll bring:
- At least 5 years’ experience writing and reporting about politics for a business publication, or about business for a politics focused outlet.
- A firm understanding of web publishing standards and journalistic ethics.
- Experience shaping both longer features and breaking news stories about financial/tax policy and legislation, trade, regulations, campaign finance and campaigns.
- Broad knowledge of the political arena, including the elected officials, regulators and policymakers who shape Washington's approach to Wall Street and Main Street.
- Fluency with the public records we use – how to read SEC filings, lobbying reports, campaign finance disclosures, nonprofit 990s, legal filings etc.
- A deep understanding of the political calendar and the markets calendar, and a willingness to work late when news is breaking late.
- Clips of strongly reported, well written stories on politics, policy, campaigns, lobbying and legislation.
- Fresh ideas about how to better package business/politics reporting and how to engage new audiences.
- A passion for how business influences Washington and how Washington impacts markets, commerce and global trade.

- Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week.
