About The Opportunity

A postdoctoral Researcher position is available in the lab of Dr. Sarah J. Jacobs, within the Institute of Biodiversity Science and Sustainability (IBSS) at the California Academy of Science. Broadly, this position will conduct research on the plant genus Castilleja (the wildflowers known commonly as ‘the paintbrushes’) , contributing to clade-wide systematic efforts, as well as species delimitation within species complexes. The candidate will have the opportunity to build and develop phenomic, genomic, and bioinformatic resources aimed at describing the early stages of speciation in this taxonomically challenging group. Similarly, the candidate will have the opportunity to build their network through collaboration with others working in this group. Finally, public outreach and education through in-person and online interactions will be a component of this position and collaboration within IBSS and across the Academy is expected. This is a temporary, one-year position, with the possibility of renewal contingent on research progress and availability of funds.

This position is based in San Francisco, California. Staff are currently expected to work from the Academy offices at least 3 times per week, which may fluctuate based on business needs. About The Team

The Jacobs Lab is part of the Botany Department housed within the Institute of Biodiversity Science and Sustainability at the California Academy of Science. We are a group of evolutionary biologists interested in understanding the drivers of diversification in plants. This position contributes to the museum’s mission of regenerating the natural world through science, learning, and collaboration by generating primary scientific knowledge about the generation of biodiversity and communicating that knowledge to broad audiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts original biodiversity science research in collaboration with the Assistant Curator of Botany on the plant genus Castilleja , focusing on systematics and speciation, incorporating evidence from the genome and phenome.
  • Contribute to the support, education and mentorship of mentees at CAS (high school, undergraduate and graduate students) as needed
  • Disseminates findings in written technical reports and academic publications, as well as oral presentations at scientific conferences and public meetings
  • Participates in project fieldwork, as needed
  • Follows all Academy safety regulations
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: A successful candidate will have the following:

Experience And/or Education

  • Ph.D. degree in evolutionary biology, bioinformatics, or related fields.
  • 5 years or more of research experience in biodiversity science, including doctoral work.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (English) and experience in communicating research findings.
  • Strong interest in biodiversity (plant preferred) and ability to communicate that passion.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Expertise in biodiversity data analysis and/or modeling.
  • Experience in reproducible workflows, code version control, and management (Git, GitHub)
  • Works as a part of multi-disciplinary teams and diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Committed to working on a team that is striving to be anti-racist in work, interactions, systems, and tools.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, and as a member of interdisciplinary teams on cross-cutting issues.
  • Flexible and creative.
  • Expertise in R programming and statistical environment for the integration, manipulation, and analysis of big data, preferred.
  • Experience in geo-spatial analysis and data visualization (R, QGIS, ArcGIS, etc.), preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, use a computer, and communicate on the phone, in person, and online meetings/calls. The employee will spend time out-of-doors at events and programs, occasionally in hot or inclement weather. Must be able to transport 30 lbs. Must be able to perform repetitive motions 50% of the time.

Compensation And Benefits

The salary range for this position is $ 66,560 - $72,000 . Actual compensation will be commensurate with experience, skills/knowledge set, and internal equity. We believe in fair and equitable compensation practices and are committed to providing competitive salaries within the industry and market standards. The Academy offers a total compensation package that emphasizes both base salary and comprehensive benefits based on the hours per week worked.
