Base pay range
$204,000.00/yr - $281,000.00/yr

The Devices Sustainability Team is responsible for gathering data to understand our carbon impact, defining leading-edge criteria, and influencing product design to reduce carbon emissions in alignment with Meta’s 2030 Net Zero Commitment. As a Product Design Engineer focused on leading Devices sustainability efforts, you will take a critical role in influencing system design of VR, AR, and New Technology Initiatives to drive carbon reduction. You will influence teams exploring developing concepts through prototyping and into mass-production consumer electronics. You will work as part of a cross functional team requiring collaboration and curiosity in domains other than mechanical engineering. Our ideal candidate has strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, sustainability Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) experience, CAD fluency, manufacturing process knowledge, and experience designing consumer electronics.

Product Design Engineering Sustainability Lead, Reality Labs Devices Responsibilities:
- Adopt a leading role in architecting carbon reduction solutions in complex mechanical systems in collaboration with cross-functional product technical leads
- Work across the full product development cycle, from discovery through sustaining driving carbon emissions reduction
- Expert technical communication with cross-functional teams across hardware engineering, Industrial Design, partnerships, and supply chain to drive carbon reduction in mechanical systems from proof of concept through mass production
- Build the bridge between Devices sustainability, Net Zero, and direct engineering teams to influence roadmaps
- Work closely with Systems Engineering to help develop Functional Requirements and Engineering Requirements supporting sustainability goals
- Own implementation of technical LCA systems such as Sphera that analyze carbon impact of consumer devices during the product development process
- Influence and design new methodologies for sustainability measurement, collect and analyze data, and present recommendations to management
- Act as a subject matter expert in sustainable design of consumer electronics and mentor and educate team members across Reality Labs
- Champion a sustainable design process, influencing the organization and leadership
- Support Extended Producer Reporting (EPR) initiatives
- ~10% international or domestic travel
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or other related technical field, or equivalent industry experience
- 6+ years of product design and development experience of complex mechanical systems
- Full system ownership experience developing high volume consumer electronics
- Knowledge of high-volume manufacturing techniques (stamping, machining, injection molding, etc.)
- Experience in sustainability analysis for mechanical systems including Life Cycle Assessments and associated tool implementation
- Experience in Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), statistical tolerance analysis techniques, functional dimensioning, geometric tolerancing, and 3D/2D CAD
- Working knowledge in material properties, such as plastics, metal, adhesive, glass, etc.
- Testing and analysis experience (FEA, Simulation, Design of Experiments, etc.)
- 10+ years of product design and development experience of handheld, virtual reality, augmented reality, or wearable electronics for high volume manufacturing, including full systems ownership
- Experience with architecture and systems engineering across systems including electrical, firmware, mechanical, and optical systems
- Experience developing novel end-to-end system architectures spanning compute, displays/optics, EE, sensors, calibration, and firmware for new products from initial conception through prototyping, validation, and production ramp
- Experience working with partnerships teams and external partners at both a supply base and product level
- Experience providing product feedback in addition to technical feedback on engineering and design work
- Experience or knowledge of sustainable solutions and trends within the consumer electronics industry
