Product Engineer

Irvine, CA (Hybrid)

Position Summary

Thales is looking for a Product Engineer (PE) who is primarily responsible for providing pre-installation reliability and sustaining engineering analysis and redesign support on a wide range of hardware and software problems to assure the highest level of production yield, and customer satisfaction as well as lowest product removal rate. Will assist the Principal Product Engineers with problem investigations and product reliability improvements from the time the design is released to production through the production life of the product while developing overall systems knowledge.

In this position, you will also hold responsibility for sustainability of design and manufacturing aspects of a product line while in the production portion of the life cycle, but offer input as needed by other disciplines throughout the lifecycle of the product.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Analyse and respond to all technical and non-technical questions accurately and clearly; Keep current on all design issues of assigned products and production related data analysis; Attend monthly meetings related to Product Engineering reporting and when needed, create regular monthly reports (verbal and written) to clarify current issues as well as root cause and correction progress.
  • Regularly participates in Failure Review Board (FRB) and Change Review Board (CRB) to ensure failures/issues reported are being identified, monitored, and have a proper Corrective Action to produce the highest reliability and lowest number of removals possible; Proper documentation of process decisions will be required according to established processes.
  • With initial guidance as needed, take the lead in root cause investigations, corrective action plans, technical validations; Participate in the redesign process when needed and requested by management by writing the EO, and follows through to implementation of the redesign; May be required to lead minor transfer projects of suppliers and may be required to lead supplier corrective actions.
  • Analyze and identify the root cause of issues that potentially affect production Yield and Rejection Rate of a Product and work to address them to minimize rejection rates; Work closely with Product Sustaining Engineers (PSE) to maintain/improve product reliability at or above predicted goals and complete implementation of solutions identified through investigations; Assist with technical validation regarding product improvements.
  • Proactively identify product performance issues at system, hardware, and software level; Review E.O.s, Notices of Change (NOCs), Quality Notifications (QNs), etc. related to assigned products throughout the production portion of product life cycle and work with Principle Product Engineer for approval; Produce timely preparation and distribution of Supplier Visit reports with guidance; Follow established processes and support improvements in processes as directed by manager.
  • Be a flexible self-starter, who can both give and accept direction appropriately. Demonstrate a solid commitment to lead well.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering or related field with a minimum of 1-2 + years of relevant work experience or a Master’s degree in Electronic Engineering or related field with a minimum of 0-1+ years of relevant work experience. Strong ethical standards are demonstrated while respecting others.
  • Read and interpret documents such as schematic, technical drawings, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Be an independent worker capable of listening, understanding, challenging, deciding, coordinating, and following-up who also works as a supportive team member; Dedicated to continuous improvement (quality, cost, reliability, and customer satisfaction).
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals clearly. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public. Ability to convey thoughts clearly verbally and in written is required.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry; Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations and determination of test reliability and validity; Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Must possess strong communication & documentation skills; Work with a sense of urgency, be self-motivated, critical thinker with strong curiosity to learn; Strong Microsoft skills required.

Special Position Requirements

  • Schedule: Core Business Hours Monday-Friday.
  • Physical Environment: Primary environment is an office environment, but production support will require manufacturing floor/warehouse time also. This will require ESD/Clean Room protective ware provided by Thales at time.
  • Physical Demands: Lifting of items up to 25 lbs periodically. Close vision capability needed for examination of parts periodically. Capable of working on a computer for the majority of the workday.
  • Travel: Periodic domestic or international travel 2-4 times per year to visit Thales key suppliers involved with development of new products or for products being transferred or delivered to a supplier or customer.
  • Regulatory Compliance Requirements: None.


What We Offer

The anticipated TTC range for this role is $70,068.60 - $130,127.40 USD Annual. The Company reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s status protected by local, state, or federal law.
