The R&D Scientist II position is initiates and executes laboratory activities within the required timescale and milestone objectives, by utilizing accumulated technical expertise to progress the work, related to assigned projects initiated by the technical director, customer service requests, and plant support requests. This position is responsible for conducting and documenting technical/hands-on work in the area of Construction, Architectural, and Printing & Packaging.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Basic understanding and knowledge of techniques, pertinent tools (e.g. statistics, computers), instrumentation, lab functions to identify problems and support completion of work assignments; uses technical literature
  • Works primarily on tasks as an independent contributor or team member. Organize and execute all activities, necessary to progress assigned projects in consultation with the application Director, marketing or relevant project manager.
  • Conducts tests, collects and analyzes data. Application Chemist is expected to provide detailed technical support which delivers added value to customers (external/internal).
  • Interactions are primarily to share factual results (e.g. written work summaries, intra dept. communications)
  • Ownership of simple technical projects; assists in more complex projects
  • Business Insight: Has basic understanding of department technical goals. Keep up to date with technical developments, within DSM DCR and within the market, associated with high performance inks/adhesives/coatings to ensure that where applicable, these developments are used for new products and technologies and new applications for existing products
  • Follows safety and other regulatory guidelines

What You Offer

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent with 8+ years of relevant industry experience OR:
  • Associates degree with 4+ years of relevant industry experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field with 1 years of experience
  • Master’s degree in Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field with 0 years of experience
  • Knowledge in the formulation and testing of raw materials for coatings, and application methods for formulated systems within their defined application area is preferred

Essential Knowledge And Skills

  • Ability to independently plan and effectively execute lab projects guided by segment strategy and priorities, solve complex problems and develop formulations
  • Very good communication, critical thinking, problem solving, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in teams, in diverse groups, and with other cultures
  • Ability to travel domestically
  • Must be comfortable working with customer laboratory personnel as well as with end users applying and using the customer formulations
