The position will fulfill the role of a support technical professional in the Polymer Physics and Optical Spectroscopy group, a sub-group of Testing, Analytics, and Physics North America (TAP NA). As such, the incumbent will be required to apply analytical sciences to address chemical, physical, and environmental problem-solving efforts, using established methods. The position requires knowledge of instrumental methods, generation of data, analysis and interpretation of data with a goal of understanding sample properties in the context of the problem at hand, ultimately yielding value-added information in support of internal Covestro customers including research, business development, production and marketing across all operating business entities and other support functions.

Major Tasks And Responsibilities

  • Uses primarily FTIR as well as Raman microscopy/UV-Vis/fluorescence spectroscopy and optical microscopy to solve customer problems. Uses techniques such as Soxhlet extraction, "dissolve and filter", and centrifugation to isolate or concentrate materials for spectral analysis. Uses the scientific method (formally or informally) as a framework to solve customer problems
  • Provide sample preparation using microtomy and other microscopy tools
  • Operate and validate analytical instruments in the Optical Spectroscopy lab. Ensure data quality through control charting
  • Plans and works on short term individual assignments or contributes to team efforts.
  • Proposes new designs or modifications to existing methods independently or in collaboration with senior colleagues
  • With limited supervision, translates their analytical data generated into meaningful explanations of process and product properties in physical and chemical terms.
  • Communicates/presents results to supervisor, team members, internal business entity customers, and occasionally to external customers; generates written reports.
  • Leverage knowledge of how multiple techniques can be applied to address a problem-solving effort including techniques that are outside of assigned work scope
  • Contribute to safety audit requirements for the Optical Spectroscopy lab including regular inspections of eyewash and hood operation.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related field with 2+ years of experience; OR Master’s in Chemistry or a related science

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience using FTIR

Knowledge And Skills

  • Ability to work effectively with limited supervision and project oversight.
  • Ability to work independently or contribute to team problem-solving efforts.
  • Strong written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility and willingness to manage multiple customers and changing customer priorities; must be able to handle on-going changes, set priorities, and manage multiple tasks.
  • Familiarity with polymers and polymer physical properties and basic chemistry principles. Broad knowledge of standard analytical testing methodology.
  • General computer skills commensurate with the technical requirements.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software is a requisite.
