The Z.O.O. Crew Supervisor is responsible for furthering Sunset Zoo’s mission of inspiring conservation of the natural world by assisting the Education Department through the delivery of high quality, education and volunteer programs. Z.O.O. Crew Supervisors are primarily responsible for supervising youth ages 11-18 while youth perform basic animal husbandry which also includes ensuring that all animal husbandry and animal interactions are performed correctly and safely by volunteer participants in the education program.

Job Duties

  • Provides excellent customer service and possesses a service philosophy which reflects the mission for the Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative professional working relationships with others, individually and in a team environment.
  • Possesses characteristics of a strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to details.
  • Performs basic animal husbandry with a variety of taxa from invertebrates to mammals.
  • Assesses animal welfare to ensure high standard of care is provided to all animals.
  • Maintains daily records concerning animal care and welfare.
  • Maintains the safety and wellbeing of ambassador animals.
  • Follows USDA and Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) animal regulations.
  • Delivers high-quality, education programs as directed by the Programs and Education Animals Manager and/or the Curator of Education.
  • Maintains open communication with program participants and parents of participants enrolled in education programs.
  • Supervises and teaches volunteers of all ages assisting with animal husbandry on correct and safe animal handling techniques and animal husbandry skills and interfaces with guests.
  • Maintains inventory list of animal supplies.
  • Performs minor first aid for injuries that may occur during education programs or at the Zoo.
  • Safely operates motor vehicles to pick up program participants from the middle school and high school and bring them to the zoo for the afterschool program. Also drives a golf cart as transportation around the zoo grounds.
  • Utilizes required PPE to safely perform the duties of a Z.O.O. Crew Supervisor.
  • Provides maintenance on and instruction in the use of equipment and supplies.
  • Completes continuing education on animal welfare, animal safety, enrichment, training, interpretation, etc. classes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills and Additional Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Three (3) months experience working with school-age children/youth
  • Three (3) months experience in animal husbandry or animal training. Knowledge of zoos, animals and conservation it vital.
  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Knowledge And Skills

  • Fifteen (15) hours of college credit in an animal/wildlife, environmental/conservation, natural resources, education, psychology, or sociology related courses.
  • Six (6) months experience working with school-age children/youth.
  • Six (6) months experience in animal husbandry or animal training.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification.

Other Information

  • This is not a KPERS covered position.
  • Must be available and able to work a minimum of 2 weekday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
  • One weekday evening from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.; and two weekday mornings from 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. as well as a minimum of two weekends each month; from 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
